fan noise immc

i have a thermal take 80mm 4800 rpm fan.
you done know my question right?
it cools really good (push 70 cpm of air out to keep parts really cool) prob is i hate the noise.
i cant put any larger fans in my case (80mm max)
how can i reduce the noise without significantly reducing the effectiveness of the cooling.

i use a thermocouple and i have the option of manual control.
what rpm is recommended for a prescott?
currently running at 45-46 hunderd.

Well guy, the honest to goodness truth of the matter is there is no real way to go quiet without either:
1. Larger HSF or at least fan
2. Water.
But let's see what we can do to help you out. First off, you mention its a prescHOTt. Which means you NEED to cool it properly or else you might as well cook eggs and boil water with it. Since you've already mentioned larger is a NO go. I would have to ask what is the ambient temp of the room in which the machine is housed. If the surrounding temp is high then there is little I can suggest to you. If the surrounding air is relatively cool or perhaps AC. Then I would suggest modding your case to better facilitate flow of cooler air from outside ur case to in. If you own one of those cases with a side mounted fan, even then, many of those are OFF centered from the CPU cooler. If it is possible to move it to sit above the cooler that will help somewhat. Another thing that can greatly help better air flow is to have proper cable management. Ensure that you IDE, floppy, etc cables are neatly tucked away out of the way of airflow. i.e. air generally flows from the front of your case to the back. Make sure there is as little blockage as possible by shifting your cables to the back of the case towards the mobo. Also consider mounting a large (120mm) low RPM intake if one is not already in place.

These suggestions will help reduce the overall temp of air within the case, thus the rpm required by the HSF to maintain your current level of cooling. IF the outside temp of air is already high, well then additional airflow will be that much LESS helpful. Other than that is water cooling.

i have no 120 mm fan mounts, i'm considering buying a new case ( i bought a cheap TT$200 aluminum case) preferably a steel one.
I always tie my cable reguardless of cooling, just for neatness.
i do have a fan mount directly over the cpu but i though it was for the shaft thing intel say to use.

50 degrees is GREAT for a presshot , they can reach 70 degrees on stock cooler . You save once you below 80 , but the lower the temp , the longer the chip will live, if you run it 24/7 . The difference would be 7-8years vs 5 years at stock temps .

Well I will say devon still doing better than me:

I running a Socket A Sempron 2800+ on my system and the temp is 58C!! with a TR2 Aluminium HS with 80mm fan funning at 2800rpm and case open. The fan runs quietly, but that temperature...

I just changed my case today to one with better air flow design. Has a side panel funnel that fits right over the CPU fan.. 80mm extractor fan at the back plus a 120mm fam (@ 1500pm, silent as well) in front to cool my 2 HDDs

HDD temps:  39C and 41C (somewhat acceptable but I did better with a HDD fan)

I'm contemplating relacing my current CPU fan with the Thermaltake Smartfan II. I personally, will use manual fan speed control: run it right up when gaming and tolerate the hissing fan.... low speeds otherwise.

I recall when I had a Thermaltake Volcano 11 at max rpm I used to hear the fan in my bedroom when the PC is in the living room during the middle of thie night..
