IT'S ALIVE!!!!
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:24:40 PM »
Trinireturnofthegamers has a booting core2duo E6300!!!

he needs a better PSU and may be to change the ram as most 965 boards don't seem to like OCZ 667 ram at the moment but it has a pulse.

My E6600 is on it's way and most of my gear should be here late next week / early following but congrats to the first working core2duo reported in Trinidad!

advice : Do not buy OCZ ram for conroe...
Do not take the temps reported by MB or software too seriously , the chip now comes with an on die temperature monitor  , so 50-60 degrees celsius will be 'cool'  , as you can feel the heatsink quite cold , and under load 80+ readings aren't bad.
You need a 24 pin PSU for cornoe as well.

OCZ is only a problem on 965 boards, as is g skill some kingston and partiot memory 677 or faster. most new bios flashes will fix it.

definately don't want to try and install windows without more power first , and scores will be low until we get OCZ ram to work..

Well look at the price points.

The E6400 is US$235
The E6600 retails for US$335

That means the e6600 is a good US$100 more (about 42% more expensive) and it does not perform 42% better.

Only 10 - 20% better. Check the benchmarks.

Doing the math, that means the E6400 is the best bang for the buck.

The 4mb cache on the 6600 has a significant advantage over its 2mb bretherin when it comes to processing large files. While the 6400 may not be the best bang for buck, its the perfect choice for an excellent degree of future proofing and e-penis length and girth.

best bang for the buck IMO is the 6300 , considering it can be overclocked straight to 3.75GHZ ( 2x clock) with water cooling its a worthwhile investment , and the difference in price between it and the 6600 CAN buy water cooling.

The_Unknown, the benchmarks differ with your statement.

A large advantage should be easily seen in real world benchmarks. I have looked at a great many and the difference is never that great.

So I still maintain that the best bang for the buck is the E6400.

Trini would be right in his over-clockers world. However, I am talking about from a stock perspective.

Not wanting to void my warranty or risk a bsod during a critical sweat.

the 4mb shared cache cannot be ignored. the same way the 6300/6400 can be overclocked.......so too can the 6600. but we dont overclock and void our warranties.......right? :D

Going from 2mb cache to 4 mb cache is 10-15% clock for clock but baego is right about the 6400 ( also 6300!! ) the performance vs price makes the 6400 the best buy. The E6600 comes in next when paired against the 6700 and 6800.

As far as overclocking, a small oc say 10-15% shouldn't hurt anything if you have good cooling but going 3.7 ghz xtreme in our 30-35c ambient temps is insane even with water cooling so Trini you need another slap in the head! especially after the fiasco with a 350W psu trying to power a system with a x1800xt power muncher vid card that needs a 350w psu to it'self! So stop with the fanboy lets oc it to hell and revisit amd thunderbird melt your system statements ok!

true - but that's assuming your memory can handle the minimum ratio no? at a 100% oc, if the mobo's miimum ratio is 1:1, you'd be limited to 400MHz (50%) overclock on ddr2 800, before the memory itself would have to be overclocked. At 3.75GHz, with a 7x multiplier, on a 1:1 ratio, your memory would run at 1066MHz. What's the minimum ratio your board permits?
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?
