Memorable stories about games

I remember growin up in Tobago, about the time the Avengers arcade game came out.  Me and my cousin found this lil arcade in Scarborough with that game, and found out that yuh could use a flattened 5-cent piece.
Compared to a real token, a flattened 5-cent piece is just about IDENTICAL in diameter, thickness, and weight.
I don't have to tell you what happened next: 2 days spent pongin out all the 5-cent pieces we could find.

The nex few weeks were pure HEAVEN!!!  We would go to the arcade and buy 2 tokens (in those days tokens were ONE-FIFTY when everywhere in T'dad was 50 cents) and then is LEVEL 5-cents afterwards, and we never get caught either.

5-cents was 'teh pwnage'.

Speaking of 5 cent pieces, I did a similar activity. I took a 5 centpiece and I bore a hole in the centre. Then I attached a string and I tied it to my belt. Basically what I did was: I "inserted" the coin and I pull it out every time. So like the previous story I enjoyed free game at the arcade...ingenious huh?

Some real smart men in dis place yes. So, as we on the topic of arcades ... I remember way back when I had just moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1990. I was attending middle school and one day after school I had to wait for my sister. She was in drama or something and had to stay after school. So, I walked across the road to the 7-Eleven to get a snack to sustain myself. There I saw something that amazed me: an arcade machine. Of course, I had seen arcade machines before, but this one was different. The characters were huge compared to those I had seen before in other games. Also, there were only 2 on the screen. I was used to seeing lots of enemies in other games. I watched the demo and in motion, the game was something to behold. The animations were so fluid and I quickly understood the point of the game. Beat the other guy senseless. It was done before in Double Dragon and other games, but not like this. 6 buttons with easy enough descriptions. I bought a token and gave it a try. Hmm ... Move up to jump and kick to do a jump kick. Nice. I would lose very soon after, but that was a great experience. Another day I returned and saw some guys going at it. Then, I saw one of them do something that excited me to no end. He sent out some kind of an attack from his hands and it flew at the guy. Wayyyyyyyyy. How de @$$ he do that? The amazing thing was that he could reproduce the action. After they were done, I asked him how he did it and he showed me. I practiced it and could soon perform it at will, like he had done. Of course, I am talking about the granddaddy of all fighting games, Street Fighter II and my character of choice, Ryu. Yeh, they do say that you will always remember your first time ...

Lucky you man...in the days when SF was the new thing players would share absolutely NOTHING.

So, one day a few years ago my brother came home from school and wanted to talk to me about something. He said that one of his friends buy a SUV with money he make playing a game online. The only games I had heard of people making money with were FPS and RTS games in big tournaments so I was wondering where he was going with this. He said that it was not a game like that. It was a RPG that you play online and he wanted to make money too.

He gave me more details. He said that you create an account with a credit card/bank account. Then, you log on and create your character. You choose a server to play on and enter the world. From there, you can do quests but mostly just kill monsters, level up and get new stuff. After hearing all that, I asked him where the money making came in. He said that you could sell stuff from the game on eBay and even a whole account with leveled up characters. Plus, his friend was doing it and made enough money to buy a whole SUV. The only thing was that he needed my credit card to get an account. I thought what the hell, I go do it. Is just a game and he probably eh go make any money anyway. So, he bought the game and I signed up for the account.

The artwork was very appealing (especially the elf on the box) and, being an old RPG guy (starting with pen and paper D&D), I was interested in it. He created his character, a halfling rogue, saying that backstab is the best. I nodded and watched him play for a little bit before going back to whatever I was doing before. Some time after, he had logged in and was waiting for his friend to "power-level" him. His friend had some other stuff to do and so he asked me if I would like to try it out. I thought that I would not be able to play because he had his character already, but he told me that you could have multiple characters on an account. It was another reason that you could make so much money from it.

So, I created my character, a high elf female wizard ... just like the one on the box. I didn't want to use a name from literature and couldn't think of one so I used the name generator (very handy) ... Ahh, Queene. That sounds like a good name. I logged in with my Queene. My first impression was that the environment was huge ... Amazingly so. I had not encountered anything like that before. The high elf city was a grand place with some truly nice architecture. I wandered outside the city and into the wild. Some really dangerous looking (not really) dragonfly things were buzzing around and I attacked them with my spells. Those were some nice effects. I think I like this. Hmm ... after a bit of fighting, I leveled up and heard the now classic Ding sound. Level 2 now.

Feeling a bit stronger, I decided to check out the surrounding areas. Somehow, after quite a bit of running I ended up near the ocean. There was a boat at the dock, so I walked on board. I explored the boat for a little bit and was going to disembark when I saw that we were moving. The boat had left the dock ... Ha, will wonders never cease. I met another passenger on the boat. On seeing that I was very new, he decided to be a little generous. I saw a trade window pop up and 20 plat show up. I asked what he was doing and he said that he was giving a little something to help me out. I thanked him profusely and vowed to do the same to someone else in the future. Many more adventures ensued but I remember those first days in my first MMORPG ... EverQuest.
