Help with an old mother board....
« on: August 07, 2006, 10:34:38 AM »

I wound up with the following for pin assignments:
1 - GND
2 - 5v+
3 - NC
4 - USBd2-
5 - USB d3+
6 - USB2+
7 - USBd3-
8 - NC
9 - 5v+
10 - GND

The problem is this, I bought a new card reader to plug into the usb pins, (so that I can FINALLY use USB 2.0).  The connections as listed on the device are as follows:
1 - vcc2
2 - vcc1
3 - usbd2-
4 - usbd1-
5 - USBd2+
6 - USBd1+
7 - GND
8 - GND
9 - OC
10 - KEY

I had hoped to rewire the connector, BUT have no idea how these other designators (vcc2, vcc1, oc, and Key (which is really not even a hole at all on the connector)) correlate to the (5v+'s, USBd3+, USBd3-).  My guess would be that the new connector is really made for an intel motherboard...BUT, is there anyway around this?

Does anyone have any suggestion, besides of course buying a new motherboard, or sending the reader back.  I'm living in Trinidad at present, and parts just aren't as readily accessible as they were in the states.

Thanks in advance.
I'd believe u if you were right.

Well in the first instance, you're prolly trying to connect a USB2 card reader to a USB1 connector (am I wrong here?) if that be the case, then in essence it shouldn't work the difference in pinouts being only part of the problem. What you CAN do as an alternative is to buy a USB2 PCI card (easily available in T&T) and that will have 2-4 USB 2 ports and potentially the 9/10 pin connectors for your card reader.

Agree 100% with buying a usb2 pci card. They're quite cheap one will probably set you back about $70/80

actually, it's a usb2.0 on the motherboard.  I checked that first.  I had initially gone to PRW to buy a pci usb2.0 but while I was changing the cpu fan, I noticed that I had pins unused on the board which were clearly lablelled usb2.0.  PRW was out of the pci readers, and I found a 25 in 1 card reader labelled for usb 2.0 connection.  I even found a forum on the net at abxzone that a fellow wanted a diagram of what each of the pins meant on the same board.  That's where I got the schematics.  I've long since lost the book for the motherboard.  Heck, I've had it for about 4 years.  I know, I know....time to change it....BUT, I'm wating for the VISTA machines to flood the market, in hopes for a major price reduction in everything else....

I can't even run Rise of Legends on the thing...it says that my cpu (a 1.4 duron thunderbird) can't handle the SSE intructions....but that's beside the point....
I'd believe u if you were right.

It's strange that it's a USB2.0 mobo and the connector is not a standard 9 pin USB 2 connector... post some pics of the pins and the connector.

Here's an image that gave me the schematics of each pin...it's a copy from an old pdf that gigabyte had for my motherboard...the pdf's no longer available online (that I can find), but I did this post http://www.abxzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78232&highlight=Ga-72XE and this image

oh ho!.. any chance that brand of board you have is gigabyte?

I read that gigabyte boards does use that style layout while just about all other brands use the "standard" layout.

EDIT: it is.. not surprised

You in a lil bind there... but not impossible to figure out.

If your USB pin connectors (to go to the board) are all separate then you have a chance, if not... well as said n ealier posts, USB to PCI card would be your better and safer bet. I once made a motherboard smoke plugging in a USB connector the wrong way.. the board still booted but no more front usb
God is dead.

Yeah man...it's a gigabyte. =/

I think I'll still try messing with the configuration of the pins.  They are all separate, and should be able to be rerouted at the connector...as long as I figure out which end is which. Even if it smokes the USB on the board, it's not like I'm even getting to use the things anyway. I'll buy a new board...but I'm still trying to hold out for the vista price drops.
I'd believe u if you were right.

WOW you must have patience akin to Job of biblical times... waiting on vista to help the prices of parts to drop... dude let me tell you, if you keep waiting for the next best, you'll be doin exactly that... waiting. Vista is at least wha..~5 months away before its available to the masses (note not corporate version) and as such you won't start seeing price reductions till close to if not AFTER that time. So sure, if you want to wait til next year March to purchase then big up. Otherwise that's a pretty moot point.

Waiting til March ain't really that bad (for me anyway).  Heck, then I will have lived through all of the cash I'm going to blow at Christmas to go home to the states...maybe I'll do some digging around in some of the shops at home while I'm up there...but I don't know that I'll be able to really afford much else before that anyway....having a crumb snatcher that eats everything you throw his way digs deeeeep into the gaming cash!  =)

P.S.  I'll let you guys know how the reconfiguration of the connector goes tonight.
I'd believe u if you were right.

heh!  nevertheless, it worked.  I hooked the beyatch up real good!
As much as it pains me to admit it, W1N was right, mostly.  It WAS a usb1 set of pins, but it was labelled usb2 (not 2.0) as in the 2nd set of usb1 pins...hehe
But, at least my card reader is working (at USB 1 speeds).
Thanks Beo!!
