DOOM RPG
The words doom and rpg dont usually go together, however this is one case where the usual doesent apply.
Doom rpg is an excellent revisioning of the classic fps, its a mobile game that makes you blink in amazement more than once.
At its core DoomRPG is bascially a port of the original however there is a major twist, its an FPS but its also turn based. Remember forget the usual. In this version you move around in real time fps perspective just like you do in the original, however when you confront an enemy and start firing off a few rounds you notice that the zombie always gets in a slash before you can fire off another round, it all happens so quickly that the first time it happens you dont really realise you are waiting on your turn, the whole thing is so fluid it almost feels like real time combat.
As the title suggests its an RPG, but only in the broadest definition of the term. Killing baddies and collecting items for you inventory gives you experience points that in time upgrades your marine, just the basics, more hit points more amour hit points and more space in your inventory to carriy items.
Graphically the game is excellent, everything is crisp and detailed just like you remembered it and there is a full assortment of monsters and weapons that look THE SAME as they did in the first DOOM. The sound takes a hit becuase its a j2me game but the background music builds the atmosphere nicely and the designers took the music from the first stage of the original and put it on the title screen, suhweet touch.
As for playability you can acess everything without touching any number keys. If your phone has a D pad/joystick with a center button and one or two soft keys then you move with the d pad shoot with the center button acess mini map with the right soft key and the menu with the left soft key. once in the menu you just scroll around and select use with the center or right soft key. its so simple its beautiful. of course there are short cut number keys for fast acess of weapons ect but it just so sweet to play this game without even opening my phone i never use the number keys.
Overall i would rate DOOM RPG as the best phone game i have ever played and one of the top 40 hand held games period it is a must have for everyone with a j2me enabled phone
