Viruses are becoming upstanding organisms

This is interesting:
Quote
Viruses build small batteries

Microscopic meaningful make work

By Nick Farrell: Friday 07 April 2006, 08:13

BOFFINS at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have worked out a way to make viruses, which would otherwise have nothing to do, other than make people sick, more productive members of society.
The microscopic make work scheme has managed to get the viruses away from their televisions to make the wires which can be used in minuscule lithium ion battery electrodes.

The boffins used the M13 virus which they say is a simple and easily manipulated virus. Normally these traits would lead to a life of crime we would have thought.

According to Nature magazine, you modify the M13 virus' genes so its outside layer binds with certain metal ions, cover it with cobalt chloride and add a bit of gold. Then when the virus replicates, it makes more copies of the wires in orderly layers. Each virus, and thus each wire, is only six manometers in diameter, and 880 manometers long, the researchers said.

It is not so much the project, as the sense of worth it gives the virus to do something more significant with their lives we guess.

More here.

Hmm I wonder what the Ebola virus could build... maybe a bridge to Tobago :p

Sounds pretty useless to me unless someone can throw some light on my ignorance.

Well it's a way to make tiny conductive wires. Think about a computer. The smaller the traces in the chips the smaller the chip. Smaller chips = smaller computers or more powerful computers of the same size.

Since it's biological I'm guessing that this part of the manufacturing will be far more efficient than other methods producing similar results. Which could mean lower costs.

Lower costs, smaller computers, more power. Useful enough?  ^_^

interesting  , we are thus one step closer in producing nanobots , at that point we'll be able to manipulate the structure of atoms eg. turn a lump of coal into diamond ... We  could use nanobots to supplament a person's immune system if they have AID's , to remove cancer without damaging other tissue...  It would make the world a better place once no one starts using them as weapons

wouldn't it be like, bio-bots/cybernetic-viral-bots (could be the basis of a good scifi game)
living processors?cool, just cool, my pc will have a personality (yes! a girlfriend!)

but the truth is dred, unfortunatly, almost every advance in science has turned into a weapon, alfred nobel is the best example, he invented dynamite and intened it to be used to make mines easier to,well, mine.
but it didn't take long for people to realize the destructive power and use it to conquer.
typical human behaviour.
at leadt he kinda made up for it, Nobel prize anybody?

I dunno about all these nanobot things. I mean it's cool and all, but there is a limit. Most of the stuff we have right now are all one trick ponies. They are small and simple, yeah in the future you may be able to integrate a bunch of them, but.... i dunno.

i get what you saying,i could understand the need for simplicity, cuz when you try to weave a set of simple systems together you get a big complex system, that in the end becomes unstable because of its dependancies on sister systems connected to it.(i learn this the hard way in PLCs)
Simple is the way; why use a shovel if all you need is a spoon.

Well not just that. Right now we are simply adapting things that already do something like what we want it to do. Of course biological things are typically designed to do a single job and only onder very specific conditions.

Nanobots are expected to do a wide range of things, and I just dont see a single devide, complex enough to do all these things, being that small. Even if they are supposed to just do one thing, typically it's a task that involves a very complex set of actions/behaviours. And I just doh think we gonna see anything like that any time soon.

I'd like to but....

About that weapons part... it goes without saying that they would invest in this type of tech to create yet another way to kill someone... alot of tech is filtered down through military research... some think HIV/AIDS and viruses like the Ebola virus were genetically engineered...

tissue paper - used by the allied forced during WWI as a filter in gas masks.
it kinda sick to think that if millions of people didn't loose their lives, tissue paper, something we wipe ours @$$3$, with might not have been invented so early.

Ebola and AIDS i almost believe too, because they both started off as terminal illnesses in primates, almost because it not unheard of for primate diseases jumping ship and mutating into something to affect humans.
AIDS is the perfect example the way aids works is that in multiples of the viral agent, it mutates mking it hard for the human immune system to keep up with it. scary stuff when i first heard that.
