Dell buys Alienware??

Unconfirmed word spreads this morning that Dell as acquired specialty computer maker in a bid to remain on the cutting edge.

advertising

Speculation is floating around the Internet this morning that computer giant Dell may have purchased computer gaming specialty manufacturer Alienware. Sources have told tech site Cnet that “the purchase has indeed gone down”.

Chatter online, such as this story which appeared at The Inquirer earlier this month as well as a recent posting by VoodooPC president and CTO Rahul Sood on the same subject at his blog, suggest that Dell hopes to keep on the cutting edge of coolness amongst PC users and that an acquisition of this nature would perhaps help in that regard.

More on this story will be reported as official announcements or denials are made.

wow!

I've always respected Alienware for their passion in churning out ultra gaming rigs.

DELL hasn't been total slouches either but still out done by the relatively small outfit that is Alienware.

Smart move to bring them into the fold.

This will make things harder for other PC makers out there that distanced themselves from DELL by having high end gaming machines with tricked out cases.

Now they will easily be bested, especially if DELL brings their mass market pricing to the Alienware line.

Dell = low prices  but boring cases and ordinary ( intel only) hardware.

Alienware = high prices but bleeding edge technology , s3xy ! cases ,range of hardware to choose from   .

if dell can bring alienware low prices without compromising anything else , i'll be happy for them. but i know this won't be true...

yeah, not likely but we all know that Alienware's prices aren't exactly "competitive"

If you build a similarly spec'ed machine yourself, you'll easily save 20-30%

So it won't be that hard for Dell to pull it off.

Yuh know this article old but anyways... the trick with dell is that because of the sheer volume it purchases in, surely it would be able to lower alienwares prices but maintain the quality. I believe its dell's best bet to buy alienware and leave it as a subsiduary which benifits from its volume purchasing but let it continue to be run (from a technical and management standpoint) by those currenty in charge. Its the best way to do it as I see it. What you all should really be asking however is considering Alienware build AMD systems as top gaming rigs... does that inherently mean that dell will be buying AMD processors ???

Dell buys Alienware, as predicted

We told you it made snese

LOOKS LIKE DELL is actually buying Alienware, I would say it comes as a shock, but then again, I would not protest too loudly if I was accused of knowing when I wrote this story. This has a lot of implications, some minor, some major. Especially for me. I might have to wear a bunny suit with big ears, for crying out loud.
The minor ones are obvious, will Alienware pick up the legendary Dell industrial design and world-class support, or will they continue as a separate entity? Will Mikey Dell become the next Steve Jobs, or is he doomed to stay about as exciting as a rack full of Presslers? Will Alienware dump AMD, or will AMD take hold of Dell through the back door?

The last one is by far the overriding concern of the compute world, not for financial reasons, or anything else, it all has to do with the rabbits. What do you think dear readers? Should an Alienware box with an AMD CPU win the bet for Rahul? Should it be decided on the lines of a 'proper' Dell badge? Should it be the next line of products debuted from either side?

The consequences are mind-boggling. The fate of bunny-suit wearing IT people everywhere hang in the balance, so don't be shy with your opinions, they can and will be taken into account. Either way, don't believe the whispers, Dellienware is a done deal. µ
