I just got a 250GB shipped in today myself. Cost price was US$95.00 (before any shipping etc..)

without any rebates.

Not bat at all. These drives have gotten pretty affordable.

Going to get a few more.

The biggest I've seen retail is 500gb.

but let me know anytime you want a 250gb. At that price it really is a no brainer to get one.

The Terabyte Drives Redefine External Storage

But it is still 2 500's in the enclosure. Still..... 1000 Gigs is a hell of an improvement from the days when you had a floppy as your long term storage device.

clever assembly by Lacie and Maxtor.

but triple ouch @ the price. US$700 - 800.00

You could buy eight 250GB Drives for that.

That is 2 Terrabytes of storage for the same money.

Alas, that won't be nearly as convenient as having one portable unit.

Price is very hot, and the terrabyte in one enclosure would be a hell of a thing to be able to walk around with... but I dont think most folks would need it at this stage.

Then again not too long ago I didnt think I could ever fill up a 160 gig hard drive either. The 250 sounds just about right in terms of price and size. Das quite a lot of games/movies you could walk around with if you stick it in an external enclosure.

One thing I'd be interested in seeing put to use is the DNA storage. I'm not too hopeful for their use as computers in an of themselves, but the use storage should be far simpler, since that's what it was originally designed to do. Who needs 1's and 0's?

4  characters = mad data storage capacity IYMC

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn3243
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DNA_computer.html

"In a different perspective, more than 10 trillion DNA molecules can fit into an area no larger than 1 cubic centimeter. With this, a DNA computer could hold 10 terabytes of data and perform 10 trillion calculations at a time."

The book I Jedi hinted at a former secret agent storing blackmail data in the DNA of ornamental plants that were popular because of their beauty, if memory serves. The agent would name the plants after people and even send them copies. Nobody knew where he had hidden the data so everyone was afraid to bump him off.

whoa  @ dna storage.

impressive figures.

saltfish, those server boasting 1 terrabyte drives are almost surely RAID Arrays.

Several drives acting as one through clever software/firmware.

Yup, chances are it's using RAID 0 for multiple drives, but I don't think the days of 1TB drives are far off at this point...

Watch the small cache on that drive boy Crixx... 2MB, Ouch!!!

Try looking for a 7200RPM, ATA133, 16MB cache, 250GB hard drive.... for US$99.00

Here's what I'm talking about...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144236

Madness, and a 5 year warranty...

Also, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1892384

but it's not the same drive, this last one has only a 3 year warranty

The one from www.newegg.com is what I'm setting my sights on...
