Attack of the Show had a piece on the best console ever last night. My personal favorite has to be the Sega Dreamcast. If you did a ratio with number of games released and good quality games, it should rank near the top. The controller was unique and the VMU did have some uses. Anyone who played NFL 2K will know what I am talking about. A built-in modem that you could use for web browsing was huge. A MMO on a console, Phantasy Star Online. Nice first party peripherals ... Fishing controller, keyboard, maracas, microphone. Last, but certainly not least, the games. Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, NFL 2K, NBA 2K, Power Stone 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Metropolis Street Racer, Sega GT, Unreal Tournament, Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5 ... and on and on. The quality, variety and just plain offbeat titles are all there and the games are still very playable now.

I think AOTS is one of the wost shows to decide on what games are best ever They do it to appease the audience, not the people that know games. Lets see if Devil May Cry, the MOST inovative gamer EVER of any console from this last generation, will be there.

I agree with you on your opinion of the show, but the actual piece was interesting. Kevin had an interview with 3 "game experts" and they chose their favorites. There was a guy from EGM, a lady from some magazine, I think and Adam Sessler from X-Play. I usually agree with Adam on his picks for games, at least when it concerns bad games. The EGM guy chose the GBA because it can play a lot of old NES and SNES game remakes. The lady chose the Dreamcast because of the quality games. Adam chose the N64 because of three of the most influential games: Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye 64.

The Dreamcast was a piece of work. Amazing little console indeed. Hated the controller though.

i parted with mine a while ago, but i have nuttin bt love for the DC..had sega not been carryin the dead weight of its previous failures , who knows what else the DC could have brought us, given a longer lifespan..

though for me  it has to be a tie between the DC and the SNES ( if only for Secret of Mana  and Chrono Trigger)

buh when yu consider things like metroid and all the game ports to gba that just had men raving, like for me, iam a rpg fannatic and id have to say that about 75% of my passion for rpg is on gba i just love them, then yyu have to consider all the sicko games for supers!! mario kart for supers to this day is still de baddest of the carts!! then mario for supers was too sick and all the other games! pluss the controll for de supers!! omg!!

But then.... golden eye 64 and zelda ocarina of time... need i say more?

Buh i have to really tip my hat to soul calibur on the dc!!! that changed my life. and crazy taxi was crazy fun. panzer dragoon phantasy star online! wow! the concept was like *gasp* online rpg on a console!! omfg!!!

..... some stupid fanboy is gonna come here and roar the stupid playstatiion yap yap final fantasy*rolls eyes* metal gear solid *rolls eyes* nonsense but as a console that just produced... i think it has to be a 3 way tie and a very close second almost a 4 way tie.

oh wow had to add this, if i had to quantify my console gaming life, it would go liek this.

5% nes:mario, duckhunt ,metroid and whatever else
25% snes: super mario,mario kart,metroid, streetfighter!!! star fox and so on,secret of mana,
40% 64: mario, GOLDEN EYE,wcw and wwf wrestling games!!!(my god the hours of wrestling!!),mario kart,smash!,zelda...ad infinitum.
10% gb/gba: tetris,mario,castlevania(harmony of discord and so forth),golden sun 1 +2 and a host of other rpgs and other games
5% ps2+ps1:tekken 2 ,3,tag,4,5 , SOUL CALIBUR 2 , cvs and so forth.. and random other games
10% DC: soul calibur,crazy taxi, the basket ball game umm wahever
5% ngc: naruto, smash,naruto,smash(lol) metroid,zelda

and if most people did this same thing, and looked at the time they spent on each console and considered the quality time versus just time, i think they would find the same 4 i picked to be of highest quality.

I dunno boy Kaizen, been on an ever-quest for the holy grail of controllers ( a snes controller with 6 buttons top side) and have yet to find it. The closest thing is the N64 controller. Pretty hard to keep one going in top condiction. They get beat up pretty quickly. Went through about four. Also, they can't be used on a PS2/XBOX where most of the fighting action is nowadays.

The DC controller was an awkward thing to hold and the analog stick was just whack.

The Sega Genesis Controller was better (and that is what I use today, albeit a PS2 version produced by SEGA, awesome) but the dpad still sucks when compared to the SNES/N64

Do you know that Nintendo patented the DPAD? That is why no other controllers in the world have the same DPAD as a SNES?

The NES to me was the best console ever. It came into the videogame market....blow the living daylights out of Atari and their nonsense with gaming, inject a COMPLETELY new and fresh aspect of gaming to this side of the world, DOMINATE the market...and give rise to the biggest revolution in entertainment. lol....I was waiting for someone to say the NES...that was complete and utter domination in truth...All my years wasted playing NES games....and it was my only console I ever owned, I still have damage to my thumb from years of playing with that controller...but there was nothing better, cuz you didn't have to study (or be sidetracked in other words) graphics or FMV sequences or high tech sound, it was just simple, fun gameplay, that sadly a lot of newer consoles still try to achieve with newer games, but they don't always do as such...
