LINUX Reboot why miles high
« on: January 06, 2006, 09:25:57 AM »
Now I think games on planes, surfing on planes and pretty much everything short of the 'mile high club' on planes is cool... and though we're moving in that direction, the last thing you want is a BSOD or something to that extent on ur plane. Well it's not quite the BSOD but its just as good, the following article sites a REBOOT on a plane take a read:

Airbus 330 seats auto-reboot

Redhat Linux involved

By Fuad Abazovic in Las Vegas: Tuesday 03 January 2006, 20:08
ON MY way to Consumer Electronic Show, CES 2006 in Las Vegas Nevada I discovered some interesting things about Information Technology marchitecture in the Airbus 330 plane.

After messing with an entertainment system in a plane in order to watch a movie, I got the weirdest message ever. The plane notified me that "the seat is rebooting". I saw the well known Redhat penguin and learned that Airbus 330 is using Redhat Linux and I have to notice that it's dead slow.

I know that some kind of onboard computer has to serve some 300 passengers but it's still slow. You can watch videos listen to the music or play games but it all takes a while to load. You have to be patient and I would really like to know what kind of CPU's and memory are they using. We don't know is it AMD, Intel or IBM or maybe something else and if you do please let us know.

I saw lot of ATM's crashing in my life and all of them used Windows NT but never expected that my seat is going to reboot. Well there is a first time for everything, and I can only regret that I didn’t had a camera to digitalise the moment.

So who said that Linux is rock stable? I am not defending Windows but just say that the alternative can and does crash. Five nines anyone?

I just hope the planes nav sys or landing sys decides to reboot @ the wrong time...

hmm.. but on a serious note.. i really wonder what they use for the instruments

for ish like tha, prob qnx or some other real time OS..or perhaps something they developed in house.. (coming to think of it.. they ARE aerospace engineers..LOL.. almost the same thing as a rocket scientist..)

seem to recall seeing ' this software is provided with no guarantee whatsoever'  in the gpl..

sidenote; in the Java eula,  you'll see  this
"You acknowledge that Software is not designed, licensed or intended for use in the design, construction, operation or maintenance of any nuclear facility."

Dear God @ nuclear. As more and more plant automation are running on windows... I hope they doh put it in a Nuclear power plant oui. In Grenada, Grenlec does use windows... (grenlec==Grenada Electricity comp). Imagine:
Nuclear Plant Supe: "Alright decrease output, inject additional cooling rods"
Comp: BSOD
Worker:"Umm.. sir I just got a memory dump BSOD..."
NPS: "What was the last process being performed?"
Worker: "Sir I clicked the wrong button and more cooling rods are being removed..."
NPS: "Well for the LOVE OF GOD, CANCEL IT!!!"
Worker: "Umm sir I will in about 5 mins"
NPS: "$HIT!!!!"
Plant: Meltdown........

There was a Homeland Security computer running Windows 95 that crashed the other day. Thousands were stuck in Miami International Airport.

Yeah I read that. I read they tried to upgrade to win98 but there was some compatibility issues with a system they use and as a result had to stick with win95... on the upside viruses for those systems are getting fewer and fewer as time goes along.

actually, wintry, i think they  were tyin to migrate to win 2000..

Quote
An upgrade to Microsoft's Windows 2000 operating system failed because of application incompatibilities, which meant one division had to undertake a cumbersome reversion back to Windows 95.

but that is not the first time MS shafted the FAA..

i seem to recall a Air Traffic Control prog that was ported over from unix to run on Win 2000 Advanced server....   apparently, there was some setting where the server rebooted after 49.7 days...( tha used to be a flaw with old 95 systems...it was supposedly fixed... cuz i rem having 10+ 2000 and NT servers up and running for at least 3 mths at a time).. a tech was supposed to have rebooted the system during downtime each mth.. but he forgot..LOlz

sigh..  air traffic controllers had to be calling around on they cells and directing jumbo jets... had a couple misses an ting...
