Problem with External HDD
« on: March 14, 2006, 12:35:04 AM »
I just assembled an external hard drive here (200GB), and when I plug it into my PC and turn it on, it does not detect, and instead says that the USB device has malfunctioned. Any ideas as to what may be causing this problem?

Both the enclosure and the drive itself are brand new (bought less than 8 hours ago). Using Win XP SP1, trying to connect to a full-speed USB port (12 Mbps). Only once, after restarting the PC, it seemed to detect the disk, but it never showed up in My Computer, after that, it keeps saying it has malfunctioned, and no drivers for the device have been installed.

usually, you will see the drive in Computer Management -> Disk Management.

From there you can partition/format etc...

If you're getting device malfunctioned, you may want to try the drive in the PC sans housing.

Just to ensure it is in good working order.

Jumper settings may play a part as some housings require that the drive be set for Primary Master.

What brand drive is it? (Please don't say Western Digital, lol)

Baego pretty much summed it up there. Check the jumper settings on the HD, its usually required to be set as Cable Select. Other than that there were enclosures that were good at optical drives but not Hard drives.. I had one such instance... and it was a decent looking aluminium enclosure too... check the enclosure using an optical drive and the HD in the machine itself. At least that way you will tell which of teh devices (if the jumper thing didn't work) is the source of your lament.

Hmm...the details on the box specified the device to be set to Master, so that was already done.

And Baego, yes it's a WD :(.

And I know the circuitry for the housing is in working order, cuz I also had another WD 40 GB drive here, plugged it in, and it worked just fine.

So I gonna plug the drive directly into system now and see what happens...

ouch @ WD

Well one other thing about WD drives.

They usually have two master settings. Foolish, I know...since they are the ONLY manufacturer that uses this silly method.

One is Master WITH SLAVE. (jumper in place)

and Master WITHOUT SLAVE (No jumpers at all)

You may want to give the latter a shot, just in case, if it's not already set up that way.

I already tried both, it just DOESN'T work with the 200 GB HDD. As I said earlier, I tried it with a 40GB (WD drive as well), and it worked perfectly. Also, the 200GB drive works properly, it partitioned correctly and everything when it was connected internally, it just refuses to work when the two are put together...

So unless anything can be done, the 200 GB will go in the PC, and the 80 GB drive will go to the external (I currently have an 80 and 40 GB drives in my PC.

Well while I'm on the topic of problems...

Today I upgraded my system from my old Celeron 1.8 to a Sempron 3000+ socket 754 system. All other devices from the old one went into the new motherboard (MSI K8T Neo-V) Installation went smoothly, but when I powered up my system, some of the graphics functions in Win XP were giving problems ; the mouse had turned into a glitchy translucent block, and some screens in windows had garbled text.

I reinstalled the video drivers and mouse drivers, but it's still giving the same problems, any suggestions as to how to remedy it? I'm next considering a reinstall of Win XP to see if that would help...

Did you try installing the Via Hyperion drivers? It's a long shot...but worth a try before you do a Win reinstall...

Did you say you switched motherboards without reloading the OS? hmmm....
OK, try this method as it's worked for me in the past;

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. Try to use a good working copy of XP with SP2 slipstreamed.

2. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

3. You receive the following message on the Welcome to Setup screen that appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.

4. On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may have to reactivate your copy of Windows XP.
