Dead in the Mortal Kombat universe?
« on: January 02, 2005, 11:43:04 PM »
Well guys, as you all know, Mortal Kombat:Deception has yet to hit the Nintendo Gamecube. With this game, you get all of the perks of the X-Box and the PS2 versions, PLUS you get to play as two characters exclusive to the GameCube version!

Sound good, right?
Okay, you're probably scratching your head, wondering....'Wait. So WHY did NEO write a title called 'Dead in the Mortal kombat universe?'
Take a look at the two exclusive characters.

http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~upbid/im...ore/image10.jpg
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~upbid/im...ary/image01.jpg

It's now official.
There is no FREAKING way that you can die in the Mortal Kombat universe. Not EVEN after being submerged in a pool of molten lava, or being taken apart by the Deadly Alliance...nope, mm-mm.

Here's an excerpt from the Nintendo Power magazine:
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~upbid/im...ore/image09.jpg

"NP: What led to the inclusion of Goro and Shao Kahn as exclusive characters?
EB: Since the Nintendo GameCube version is coming out after the other versions, we wanted to add something exclusive and special to set it apart. People have always wanted to control the boss characters in MK, and now we are giving them the chance to control two of the biggest, baddest bosses from any MK game!"

(shakes head)
God DAMN. Heaven and Hell in the Mortal Kombat universe must be damn near empty, by the looks of it. Heck, with this turn of events, I should really stop thinking Mavado's dead, too. Or Frost. And Hsu Hao....will probably stay dead, because, from the looks of it, nobody, not even his own creators, like him.

No, really.
This whole 'comeback from the dead' is seriously getting OLD.
And by old, I mean 'crusty old fart' OLD.
I am intrigued as to how these guys would play, but seriously, they were better off dead. Yeesh. You want to talk about popular? Bring back KINTARO, for Pete's sakes! Now HE was a bona-fide KILLER.
Seriously, we've seen Goro come back from the dead more times than Michael Jackson's career. Enough, people. Just let him die, rest in peace and be the banquet of the earthworms.

Shao Kahn's return, on the other hand, I saw coming a MILE away.
I really didn't think Havik's ending was just mere co-incidence anyway.
I just didn't expect him back -this- soon.
Mortal Kombat 7 or 8, perhaps.
DEFINITELY not Deception.

Now, here's the ball-buster here.
We've practically tolerated Liu Kang coming back from the great beyond. Yeah....to the point where some of us actually like to kick major tuckus with him. Johnny Cage....tolerable. Goro and Shao Kahn? Bordering on the absolutely RIDICULOUS.
The main point of characters dying in these games in the first place is to set the mood for new events to unfurl in their absence. that's kind of the whole POINT, ain't it? Look at what happens when Shao Kahn dies. 'A great evil dies so that a greater evil can take over', right? Liu Kang bites the dust. 'The remaining heroes band together to fight evil, one of them seeking revenge'. It's the stuff great stories are made off.

And what kills the sheer drama of it all?
Resurrecting roadkill, of course.
I mean, what's the point of killing them if they're just going to come back? Then again, I guess a certain somebody out there would know a little bit too much about coming back from the dead, isn't that RIGHT, SCORPION??!

Nah. You're cool.
Everybody likes you.
You RAWK.

Bah. I've done enough squawking for today.
Let's see what you guys have to say about this turn of events, shall we?
(sits down in comfy armchair and blows bubbles out of a pipe)

EDIT: Linked because the images don't seem to be responding too well.

I don't think fighting games should ever be taken seriously for their storylines. While they try to put some effort in it, it never seems to make sense, because the story may call for someone to die, and it turns out that certain character was popular. So then they bend the story backwards because they want the game to be popular again and bring that character. It's like when they released MK 3 without Scorpion. They knew the game was about to bomb, and then comes UMK3. I personally always like Shao Kahn, so I welcome him. They could bring back everyone for all I care.

How about this then?

Put everybody back from every one of the series and then KILL THAT MK!!!!!!!!

Game Over, Everyboy's dead.  Go Home.  No thanks for playing.  No advanced storyiine, plot thickening or cheat codes even.  Mosu.

I mean, in SF when Gouki catches you with a Shun Goku Satsu in the official story, at least you STAY DOWN WHERE YOU SHOULD BE!!!!!!!!!!
Consciousness yearn to kill
To re-affirm the will,
Zealous I burn the drill
Forging, I mould the skill.

Or have them as ghouls. lol

Greyed out shadows of their former selves, ringing special moves from beyond the grave.

Worked for Resident Evil!

It really shouldn't matter if they are dead or not in the storyline once they are included as cameo / bonus characters.

Similar to Link/HeiHachi and SPAWN (lol) making their presence felt in the Soul Calibur world. Trying to put any sort of storyline to those guys in the Soul Calibur universe is laughable at best and insulting to anyone who tries to follow, expecting something sensible and cohesive.

You know Baego, I actually think they could have fit those cameo characters in quite nicely. SCII had a more or less vivid storyline, kinda vague if you ask me.

Heihachi could certainly have fit.
Link and Spawn are another story.Link doesn't even look like the right species, and Spawn is scifi rather than fantasy.

Umm... Link does not look like the right species of what? Spawn or link can’t fit in, but Necrid can? And what species is Necrid? If he is the right species, then why isn’t link? And how does Heihachi fit in more if he does not even wield a bladed weapon in a game that is based on that particular combat, where as both Spawn and Link do?

Hmmm…

You know, Baego, you do have a good point there.
Those cameos were a rather pleasant surprise in the Soul Calibur series, and were very well pulled off, without sustaining any of the 'duck out of water' syndrome.

However, there's just one thing I'd like to point out, though.
Those characters somewhat fit in because they weren't really canon to the storyline, and offered some form of deviation from it, just to spice things up a notch.

Shao Kahn and Goro, however, are far from being cameos. They are canon characters with pivotal roles in the MK universe, and have made the biggest impact upon the story with their respective deaths. With that said, unearthing them somewhat disrupts the whole mood set by their demise, because, you know, by all rights, they SHOULD be dead.
It would come like Liu Kang being in Deadly Alliance despite the fact that he's been murdered in the introduction. It does not make sense to bring back dead characters after creating so much hype over their deaths, not so soon, anyway.
