Still cr@p for gaming, but it totally ownz for everything else  ,  the Extreme Edition dual cores still cost 900 US and require even more of a monster psu and cooling .

As expected,  dual cores are absolutely worthless for gaming until people start multi threading their games, a 3.2 ghz dual core is only 9% faster than a 3.2ghz single core , while it is 4 times the price of one . So unless you plan on doing  encoding / rendering/CAD ,  stay away from a dual core till next year .

note the 'Pentium Xtreme 840' is the dual core , 3.2ghz processor .

Most of us GATTers want gaming pcs , but some of us actually have to do WORK , i myself do a little photoshop and video/ audio encoding once in awhile .  And some of us work/run companies that need powerful processors  to do high end work eg. rendering .
as you can see the athlon64 comes back and still owns a dual core P4 in doom III,  note that the dual core P4 has hyperthreading , so it registers as 4 cpus !
I'm sure AMD will  be the king  of dual cores all round , even in most intel domains like video encoding ,   they are not hampered by heat  and power so they can reach higher clock speeds  ( for AMD) than  the pentiums can, and therefore higher performance .
For all those too lazy to read the articles, the Extreme Edition has unlocked multipliers like an athlon FX,  making overclocking a breeze , though i doubt it will reach far .

this is a VERY big thing, even while most apps aren't multi threaded to take advantage of it, you can run multi apps alot better than before, imagine  playing quake 4 , surfing , and ripping a DVD at the same time , with no tangible loss in performance from either !   ( of course you'll need 2 gigs of RAM or more ! ) .

The Fact remains that unless ur running a server, using lots of video editing apps (with HT support) or for that matter have a HT OS like the still awaited LONGOVERDUEHORN, having all that power (and heat) is a price premium that most gamers will not waste their time with. Sure, I can burn/doom3/surf/pick_my_nose at the same time, but even so, I doh have multiple monitors an SLI rig to NOT pull down my performance in Doom3 while video encoding. So Dual cores is a server thing the way i see it, till That next OS comes out and games are more suited for them. Sure ppl are starting to turn the wheels that says program everything for mulitple threads... but till it comes in to full effect I go still be eyeing down and drooling over meh (before the year out) 35-4000+ Athlon 64 (Single Core) Rev E. Its a step in the new direction but till the future is now, its just lots of pretty PR hype that I and most other ppl can't afford. Oh and another thing I agree AMD will own intel in an Dual Core. And I hear the next gen AMD processor may have their own implementation of HT as well (note HT in this post refers to Hyper Threading and NOT Hyper Transport).

AMD  is definetly king of the PC desktop market for the low end as it stands , with 64 bit Pentium chips costing  220 US for a 2.8ghz , while you can get an athlon 64 3200 for 200, or a 3000 for 150 , and overclock either straight to 4000+ speeds .

I know I am a cinic when it comes to wintel but hey I couldn't help but laugh at this article:

Intel dual core launch is no big deal at all

Opinion Today is DC day

By Charlie Demerjian: Monday 18 April 2005, 09:16
INTEL IS TAKING A HUGE step backward today with the dual core Pentium 4 launch. Word out of Intel HQ is that one of the dictats of the post Barrett order is to under promise and to over deliver. The other new order is no spin. Intel is about to fail miserably and publicly on both accounts. What a way to welcome Otellini in and set the tone.

The dual core launch is barely not vapor for availability, over promises and under delivery, and comes with so much spin it could power an amusement park for a year. It steps on partners by playing favourites, and does all this as a cynical PR play.

Let's start as we mean to go on. The worst kept secret in the business is today's dual core launch, it was pre-announced by everyone under the sun. Intel is desperate not to be seen by the press as being beaten again, 1GHz, 1.13GHz, iAMD64 and DDR must really have taught Intel a lot. Sadly, not many of these lessons appear to have sunk in during class. Perhaps the pupils were staring out of the window.

What readers of the INQ know is that AMD has been shipping dual cores for months to customers, and they are in the field, and in use. AMD beat its own date by months, but have not been crowing about it. I called the usual suspects, and no one apart from a favoured few OEMs had them a few days before the launch. Some said that it was no big deal, they expect to sell a few EEs, others were a little more vocal saying that they hadn't even received engineering samples, much less had things to sell.

So, Intel is putting out a ultra low volume window dressing toy for the benefit of people like me, not for you. The EE will launch, but when will they launch the 866 and 933, I mean the 3.0 and 2.8?

Could there be any more problems? Sure, how about availability? With shades of the bad old days of late 2003 and early 2004, how much do you want to bet that you can count to the number of units that the blessed favoured vendors have on hand? Want to bet that they will finally have real quantities about the time Intel was going to release the chip in the first place? This cuts into sales of existing CPUs while the vain and stupid rich wait for availability. Lets hear it for hot lots sent to PR.

So you lose current sales, tee off customers and partners, and all for a smile from the people in the press who actually do know better. Who thought up this plan, and why do they still have a job?

The funniest part of this all is that not only did AMD beat Intel in shipping chips to end users, but so did IBM and HP. By any objective measure, PA-RISC and Power have had dual core out for over a year, so even without AMD, you are at best number three. AMD has had product for a quarter, and Intel is standing up, waving its hands and shouting 'look at me'. It's going to be a wonderful Monday but we do hope it's not full of fawning moronic reviews followed by months of wait. Please don't let this trend continue.

BAW... die intellites die...LMAO j/k
