Record breaking cullBy Nick Farrell: Friday 01 July 2005, 08:02WHEN THE Tempel 1 collides with the Deep Impact spacecraft, on Sunday, a CD containing the names of 625,000 people will be vapourised with it.Organisers in NASA's Education and Public Outreach program created the Send Your Name to a Comet campaign. The Internet-based effort allowed participants to sign their name up for destruction. The list was burned onto a mini-CD and attached to the spacecraft, under the thermal blanketing to make sure no harm could come to it, at least until the entire satellite slams into the comet at 23,000 mph.We don’t know what level of satisfaction the 625,000 will get knowing their name is going to be vapourised in space hitting a traditional symbol of woe and misfortune. However it is nice to know that they are involved in the highest smashing of a record ever recorded. Now why didn’t they include some Boyzone singles and some Bulgarian Popfolk while they were at it.
