More recommendations, this time in "classic" literature. I'll stick to books I've actually read:

Candide - Voltaire
Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain
Crime & Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Trial - Franz Kafka
The Decameron - Giovanni Boccaccio

Short stories by:

Guy de Maupassant
Anton Chekhov
Edgar Allan Poe
Sherlock Holmes (all of them) - Arthur Conan Doyle

If you like Doyle then you should also try H. Rider Haggard. He's a good author who tells his tale well... but be warned, he uses big words.

I read just about anything but prefer sci-fi fantasy stuff.  My favorite authors are (in order):  Raymond E. Feist, Tad Williams, Robert Jordan, Stephen Lawhead, R.A. Salvatore, Neil Gaiman, Jennifer Roberson, Melanie Rawn, Weiss & Hickman, Piers Anthony, Terry Goodkind, and Douglas Adams.
I'd believe u if you were right.

I to am an avid reader and have read nearly all the books posted in this thread (with the exception of Lord of the Flies), so I won't bother to name them all.

Let me say that i am glad that someone took the chance to feature West indian writers in our discussion. It makes me proud to see that readers in this country have no forgotten the Caribbean writers influence to modern literature.

Sam Selvon, Michael Anthony, Earl Lovelace: all great writers in their time.

Naipaul.....don't get me started on that hypocrite. I confess he is a worthy writer, and in his earlier texts he certainly has a style which ranks him among the masters. But since he became Sir Vidya, turned his back, and spat on the country that fostered his development and proviced inspiration for many of his texts, I have nothing but loathing and contempt for him.
