Natural disasters abound
« on: December 28, 2004, 11:48:36 AM »
Well by now everyone knows about the huge earthquake that has killed thousands in the far east, and to think we had a thread about our lil $hit of an earthquake here... anyways that aside.. is it just me or has the earth come under serious attacks lately hurricanes a plenty, earthquakes, floods. Now heres a link to an article that is hidden in the bowels of cnn that I think is of worth noting.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/12/24/a...d.ap/index.html
its worth noting cause (in case yuh too lazy to check it), it states that there is a 1 in 300 chance of a rather large asteroid hitting the earth. Now you may think this is nothing, but when u consider thats substantially lower than the chance of dying in a plane crash (as easy as that seems these days) so  i'd say we have some cause to panic :) anyways to put things in a better perspective, this rock would have a net impact of around 1600 Megatons... teh bomb they dropped on Hiroshima was 13 Kilotons... so it would take about 77 Hiroshima bombs to equal 1 Megaton or you could say 1 H bomb these days is about 1 Megaton... so that means this rock would be the equivalent of dropping 1600 H bombs all at once. Basically if this came to pass consider the human race extinct... :P

sorry bout that millions earlier, didn't realise I wrote that...

So have a read and lets see what ppl think of this lil hidden fact that we all seem oblivious to... :P

LOL...there's no such thing as a 'natural disaster', only natural phenomena...:)

And forget the asteroid hitting, there's a greater chance of us getting a 300+ metre wave hitting the eastern US seaboard, South America and the Caribbean (yes including T&T), and this would most likely be in the next 100 years or so.

I hear tell that flood's caused about 60,000 fatalities.
And the body count keeps rising.
Lord, please put a hand!

...and guys, try to keep this from getting political.
This is a disaster we're talking about here. Countless lives have been lost. Don't let politics creep into this.

...it's a bit late for giving a hand...

And to a point, those who died are the lucky ones, as anyone who survives such an event would say, the living are the ones left to suffer at the situation that has been left for them to recieve as a result.

Death and distruction is nothing uncommon in the lives we live today, whether it be by 'natrural phenomenon' or by some man with a gun and a white B14... as for deaths well think about this, yes its unfortunate that some 50000+ ppl have died from an earthquake or the resultant tsunami, however that frails in comparison to the # of ppl that die each day of starvation, war (note more ppl have been killed in the name of GOD than for any other reason, just thought I would stick that in there), disease, freak accidents... there are millions of ways that ppl die all around us all the time. Alot of this is just plain human negligence... if the world wanted to end hunger tomorrow it would happen (take from a very good book: conversations with God) when someone comments about the absurdity of that comment I will explain how that is in fact possible, but back to the point... why is it that it takes a massive earthquake for ppl to focus on those dying? those who weren't nevessarily dying or thought to be dead so soon? WDF, the way I see it, its all HYPE, media point boosting nonesense, I do agree it needs to be covered, I do agree ppl need to see this, but at the same time these are the same ppl that forget all those dying in africa (cause its OLD NEWS), those dead in wars in saw bosnia and other such war torn coutries cause (am3ricas war on terrorism sells better). I don't agree with u SPK that those that died are the lucky ones... I really doubt a man watching his wife adn family swept away to their inevitable watery grave and his eventual death thought that way in the least. Those that died are rather the unfortunate example that should wake us up to the fact that ppl die and to appreciate what and who u have... ALSO its NEVER too late to help...

I've said enough for now.. however I did find some interesting facts online whilst looking up atomic bombs since I made that asteroid comparison... just to emphasize that the world is in its current state because of ourselves and selfish ways... the Largest bomb or the 'king of the bombs' was the Tsar bomb, detonated by the Russians during the cold war days... here is a lil except on it:

Quote
This colossal, almost unimaginably destructive weapon was dropped from 4000 metres (approx. 12000 feet) from a Tupolev 95 strategic bomber and exploded altitude for an airburst test. Details are scant in documenting the awesome power of such a weapon. However it is known that the flash from the bomb was seen six hundred miles from the explosion and the shockwave of the bomb circled the Earth three times. A bomb of this order of magnitude is some 6500 times more powerful that the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The blast caused a one hour radio blackout (due to the size of Electro Magnetic Pulse produced) and the mushroom cloud rose some 65km into the atmosphere2. It was observed that wooden buildings hundreds of kilomteres from the explosion were flattened and stone houses lost their roofs3.

Dread FCUK everything that the media hypes as a tradegy... just looking at what human beings are capable of, the only tradegy is the human condition...

The loss was a gr8 one that wud not be forgotten easily

the magnitude of this disaster is appauling

there needs to be sum kind of disaster preparedness system to warn ppl bout this thing

Building codes should be enforced

a disaster of this calibre should not be allowed to occur again

its a race against disease spreading now
