Source engine : AMAZING!
« on: November 29, 2004, 03:02:39 PM »
the Source engine is nothing short of AMAZING , you can do facial animations , have an interactive world like none other ,  and the graphics engine is the best yet .
Even better , it runs on a TNT2 !!!! and is VERY forgiving of swapping texture data to your RAM [if you have enough :P ]  .

a screenof it running on my old TNT2 using latest Nvidia drivers [61.03]

It runs on my 32mb TNT2 and my brothers 32mb laptop 9600 VERY well [though the tnt2 looks like crap] . I can play it on HIGH everything with my 8500 128mb VERY smoothly ! [ just go into BIOS and give your card lots of AGP aperture RAM ]

Best game yet, best engine yet !

Which video card did you capture that screenie with? The 8500 or the TNT2?

Would be nice if you had one from each to show the difference...

Rampage i believe hes refering to HL2 adaptability. its really impressive that it can run on almost any card. its backward compatibilty is amazing. although compared to Doom3 visually it isnt as impressive but the game is still great. im very very impressed. now its Unreal3's turn to impress us.

It has been proven over and over that AGP Texture setting in bios makes little or no difference to performance. If anything setting too high can cause instability to certain cards. Set to 64MB or 128MB and be done with it.

You might want to use 44.xx series for more a performance boost. New drivers does nothing for older cards.

Or even better, omega nvidia driver set.

Doom III has a far superior GRAPHICS engine : but the Source engine has much better physics , and is better all round .  I just  underclocked my athlon XP to 750mhz, and ran the game, it ran pretty smooth except for in big fights [4-5 combine vs 6 ant lions ]  Amazing engine , fullstop.
The pic i posted is of the TNT2 , i'll post an 8500 image for comparison .
Before i set my AGP aperture makes a BIG difference in HL2 , before i set it to 256mb , the game would lag a bit on high, as if it was swapping texture data, but after i turned it up .
HL2 on HIGH uses 128mb of Vram or less,  i compared memory usage with settings on medium vs on high texture detail, on the same map, in the same position , there was no change .

MY only complaint is that Valve left an AI bug in the game, sometimes Alx or Judith will stick in an elevator sequence  , stopping the game till you restart the level .

lol@better all round. just because it running on people crap pcs doh mean that source engine better, it just means that doom3 engine requires a badder man pc due to the shadow and lighting real time calculations. doom3 engine is 21st century stuff ;). you should be careful with what you saying, better all round in terms of performance for source engine but not in terms of engine itself. doh mix up de two and try to never say that source better than doom3 engine, only a fool would say that, and you from arima , doh disgrace we

Source is better all round because it has '21st century' physics , AI , facial animations etc.   But we'v seen what a good programmer can do to the quake 3 engine through COD , i'm sure by the next game or two that uses the Doom engine, whatever revisions made in it by then will make it better .

Rampage dont argue hes lost. at the heart of this arguement is a fanboys rant for ATI since HL2 is ati really ati call card and Doom3 is another "TWIMTBP" Nvidia product . its only obvious that hed rant on an on about it. not that source is a bad graphic engine but when compared to Doom3 its abit lacking. oh well

by what you just say i realise you eh really know what an engine is oui. ai eh have nothing to do with de engine really. more with ai scripting. and if you think an engine better because of physics ;which engine wasnt even made by valve then i also eh know what else to tell you. de physics you see in hl2 an thing can be done in doom3 engine as well, but at least carmack using he own shiznit and not using someone else phsyics engine. you hadda understand that an engine have nothing to do with pshyics or ai. each of those have they own engine or scripting. eg: havoc engine. but i done talk anyway, this is useless.
*Rampage shakes his head at the disgraceful arima fella. you let arima down :(
