First off, my apologies if this comes accross as solicitation. I assure you, I'm only seeking to inform other Trini's about a rather fun and addictive pastime that I've had for a couple years now. I get no monetary gain whatsoever from the bit of information I'm about to share, directly or indirectly.
Ever heard of something called a MUD? I'm not talking about what you get when you mix dirt and water.
MUD is an acronym, it stands for Multi User Domain (or Dungeon).
I'm relatively certain that most of you know what a MMORPG is.
The main difference between a MMORPG and a MUD is, for the most part, that a MUD is a text based game. Yeah, you read that right, no graphics.
Now, before you get all turned off, think about what no graphics really means.
Firstly, in a good MUD, a lot of attention will be paid to the game mechanics details. That is, things like a combat system, levelling, character creation and roleplay. Ever played a really "pretty" game but found that it lacked "substance"? Well, without graphics, substance is the focus.
Ever heard of Dungeons and Dragons? MUD's basically evolved from the original paper and pen games, except the tedious things such as dice rolling and math in general, heh, became automated and were placed behind the scenes. MMORPG's came about when people decided to experiment with graphics.
Now, we're in Trinidad. Not all of us are gifted with net connections that can support these more modern MMORPG's, well, not all of us are gifted with -graphic cards- that can supports them. Notice how sending text accross the net doesn't take half as long as sending a picture, far less for video? Yep, even with our dial-up at the mercy of the phone company, we can take part in player killing with and against people halfway around the world, over the net.
If you pride yourself as a cerebral gamer, and appreciate substance and subtle, intricate gameplay coupled with fast, competitive action, or are just curious, check out
www.dsl-mud.org and the forums there, or, just e-mail me at lendach@hotmail.com for further details.
One more time, I don't even know the person that runs that particular mud, but the 200+ other people that play there simultaneously on any given night are pretty cool. I have nothing to lose if you don't check it out and nothing to gain other than mabye a couple more trini's for company.
Bah! this ended up being a lot longer than I expected. If you managed to read the whole thing, mabye you can end up enjoying a text based game. Oh, I almost forgot, it's free. Not a free trial, no huge download, nothing like that, it's free. All you'll need is to download a MUD client, sort of like an instant messaging client. More info on that if you check out the site or e-mail me.
