[TTLUG] A sad farewell
« on: June 08, 2004, 08:22:11 AM »
I've rejoined TTLUG briefly, to explain my mysterious  departure from
this list and to say goodbye proper now that everything is sorted out.

I cam to Trinidad around 18 months ago. Within months of being here I
came across some of the excellent work that TTLUG are involved with and
promptly decided to see what was going on. At that time I believed that
TTLUG was missing out on an excellent opportunity to create a more
recognisable Open Source presence in Trinidad and Tobago. When I started
saying so I found plenty of supporters (and plenty of dissenters).

Today, a considerable amount of progress has been made towards making
TTLUG and its members a more influential body. True, these are external
bodies to TTLUG, but they have their roots firmly set here.

A number of activities are under way, each managed and hosted by members
of TTLUG. I would like to acknowledge these fledgling activities and
salute those of you who are able to find some of your own personal time
to devote to these worthy activities. Don't get concerned about the pace
of progress, when it is voluntary, progress is all you can ask for.

Whilst in Trinidad I have been working as a lecturer in the Department
of Mathematics and Computer Science. This is another body that shows
great potential, but is yet to realise much of it. Again, I am pleased
to say that good things are happening within UWI. It is with great
regret that I have had to resign, the opportunities for myself and for
the department are immense, it is a real shame for me to be leaving them
behind.

My reasons for this resignation are purely personal and reflect, in no
way, on Trinidad, UWI or the wonderful people of this wonderful land.
Family matters are drawing me back to the UK, however, I am quite sure I
will be returning periodically to continue the work I have started here
- and to lime on the beach of course.

I will be continuing with my Burrokeet development project, which
continues to employ one full time and one part time member of staff
here. My intention is to generate additional funding in the UK to enable
me to continue this work with research and development in the UK,
University of the West Indies and the University of Guyana. Therefore,
this project will continue to employ local talent in Trinidad as far as
possible. So you are not seeing the end of me yet ;-)

I will also uphold my promise to try and raise funding for UPTT once you
guys are clearly defined and regulated. Don't rush it, this promise
holds for as long as it needs to hold. Get it done right and I'll step
in when I may be able to help.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank TTLUG, UWI and every one
of the wonderful Trinidadian people I have met. It has been a fantastic
experience. Should any of you find yourself in the UK, you have my email
address, let me show you the English version of liming.
