Upgrading My Computer [Help Needed]
« on: October 19, 2013, 03:34:30 PM »
So I got this computer last year and was playing all the new games well.. But it's a medium spec computer and I haven't changed any parts since.. ($$ problems). So I need a bit of help upgrading this computer.
So far this is what i got:

Case: Azza Solaris Case
CPU: Will like to upgrade from my FX-4100 to a FX-8350 (4GHZ 8 Core Black Edition AM3+)
GPU: Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB GDDR5 or Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHZ 2GB GDDR5
RAM: Corsair Vengeance (2x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz
PSU: I am trying to decide between Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750 Watt 80 Plus Bronze and PC Power & Cooling 750 Watt Silencer
Motherboard: ??? This is a big question mark because I am still searching for a reliable motherboard that could handle all of this..

I won't be switching to SSD just yet because I like my 1TB HDD.. Also, what do you think of liquid cooling? I know it's high maintenance but is it worth it? Because I already have case fans etc. etc. So what do you think?

You may want to post your budget...that will definitely help in recommendations.

Here's a nice lookin budget minded mobo to start with:

The cooler that I am currently considering as a replacement to what I own now (but in white):

What I currently use, for reference:

The budget isn't much of a problem but it is best to keep it under $800US.. And I like the CPU Cooler with the light.. I already have 2 fans with blue LED lights in them. And I'll keep that motherboard in mind.

between the two psu's you selected there I would go with the first because its modular, though I would prefer to choose something made by seasonic:

If you're budget is 800USD you wont be able to consider liquid cooling... unless you are planning to use an all-in-one unit to cool your CPU only...

If you're not planning on over-clocking, then no liquid cooling is not worth the money... if you are then yes it is

also in my experience liquid cooling does not require significantly more maintenance than air cooling... its the initial investment in time and money that's high

Waiting a couple weeks for Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales is also a good idea.

End of november. Save up some more money and see what you can grab.

Getting a SSD hard drive is also a wonderful investment

Just pointing out, the Gigabyte Windforce R9 Card is PCI-E 3.0 and the Motherboard supports PCI-E 2.0
Will need some fixing there.. Crossfire maybe?

Just means that it can operate at a higher speed on the PCI-E 3.0 slot. It will still work fine. But as the other recommendations state, prioritize what you want to upgrade first and work from that.

Okay good

After hours of research, another update..

Case: Azza Solaris Mid Tower Case (6 fans total)
CPU: FX-8350 (4GHZ 8 Core Black Edition AM3+)
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Superclocked 2GB GDDR5
RAM: Corsair Vengeance (4x8GB) DDR3 1600MHz
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750 Watt 80 Plus Bronze
Motherboard: ASRock 970 EXTREME3
HDD: My same Western Digital 1TB HDD 32MB Cache

I changed the GPU because the other ones were quite large and did not seem to measure up to my current case.

nice, like the move to nvidia. good man.

Now throw away that AMD and Asrock motherboard and you will have a winner.

Get an i5 or i7 in there. Your budget should allow.

If not, go wash a few cars and make up the difference.

An SSD would be epic but you can always get that from the girlfriend for Christmas and use the 1tb for storage.

BOOM BANG!

Welcome to the war soldier.

Yeah i hadda agree with you here, that amd ain't gonna cut it.

My recommendations for a better board would be any of these 4:

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Computer-Corp-Motherboards-Z77A-G45/dp/B007QWI9TY/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1382279154&sr=8-13&keywords=z77+motherboard

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Computer-Corp-Motherboards-Z77A-GD55/dp/B007QWI9YO/ref=sr_1_35?ie=UTF8&qid=1382279206&sr=8-35&keywords=z77+motherboard

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-CrossFireX-NVIDIA-Motherboard-GA-Z77X-D3H/dp/B007R21KBC/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1382279154&sr=8-15&keywords=z77+motherboard

http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-Intel-Z77-Motherboard-Performance/dp/B007NP5PLO/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1382279154&sr=8-16&keywords=z77+motherboard

And as for processor, there's a guy on another local forum selling these for $800:

http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-i7-3770-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B007SZ0EHE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382279362&sr=8-1&keywords=i7+3770

which is an insanely good deal.

You can get a little overclock to 4.3ghz on any of the boards which is more than enough for any current gaming.

Plus you get PCIE 3.0 capability as well as multi gpu options.

And yeah an ssd as well around Black Friday sales.

All the other parts good as is.

Not really going to overclock just yet. I've always wanted to try Intel's i7, but I am a bit shaky when it comes to the motherboards as I prefer AMD processor + motherboard combos. Will buy a 120GB Samsung SSD, probably later this year I will consider SLI with 2-3 cards..

No need to overclock with that i7 or even an i5

They are plenty powerful as is...stock.

You will be running Battlefield 4 like a breeze with those specs Vengeance posted.

That CPU price is INSANELY good. wow.

If I did not have one already, would certainly buy.

True eh but a lil overclock good for those hardcore video encoding tasks, every Mhz helps.

Ah, well then no need to overclock then. I don't really do any video encoding myself.

Gaming is the only heavy duty workload my PC sees and the i7 handles that at stock speeds just fine.
