RAID problem...plz help
« on: September 05, 2012, 02:58:59 AM »
hi all,

i'm posting this for a friend.

he recently got a second hand machine from someone and is currently trying top setup RAID (speed). While the RAID was sucessful, any additional HDDs he plugged into the other SATA ports have caused the machine not to function.

i.e. the machine refuses to boot into the installed OS when the additional drives are installed.

could anyone tell me if his motherboard can handle both RAID as well as single drives.

his motherboard is the ASUS ROG RAMPAGE EXTREME.

thanks a lot.

How many drives he using in his RAID setup?
Which RIAD he going with?
What model/size drives he using?
At exactly what point during boot does it halt? What error message?

The board should definitely be able to handle RAID as well as single drives. Heck, almost any motherboard you buy new these days can at least do RAID 0/1/10.

If all the SATA ports set to RAID mode, then you can have one array per drive and then another array for the (assumed) RAID 5

Hope this helps.
God is dead.

model drives:
2 * 160GB WD Caviar Black in raid 0 (speed)

1* 640GB WD caviar Black (data drive)

1* 1TB WD Caviar Green (data drive)

the 2 160 GB in the raid 0 works fine once none of the others are installed.

as soon as any of the other drives are installed the machine reuses to boot saying that it has no boot device.

everything is fine in the BIOS with the boot priority as follows
CDROM/DVDROM
RAID

SATA ports were tried on all 3 settings (IDE, RAID, AHTPI* i think)

BTW he is attempting to run a RAID as well as individual data drives (not part of the raid)

But does the system detect a bootable RAID as well as the other drives when connected? Or is it that no drives are detected?

This is an anomaly.   What he is doing is exactly how I had my drives configured when I was on X58...two drives in RAID-0, plus two other storage drives.

...and that was on a 'cheap' MSI board.

There's no reason why this same configuration shouldn't work here.

Have you tried a BIOS update?
It may seem drastic, but a lot of times it's a BIOS update that resolves niggling issues like these.

If he wants speed, tell him to sell those sata drives and replace it with a SSD Drive

speed galore

BOOM!

These recent purchases I realize that manufacturers taking BIOS updates very serious. Not like before when an update was just an update, they making it mandatory now.

Nice.

When I buy a new board, I make it a priority to update it to the latest BIOS...even if I bought it used.  Too often I've encountered peripheral, storage, and memory compatibility issues which were eliminated with a timely update.

You will usually see warnings saying 'don't update your BIOS if everything is working.'
That's just the manufacturer saying 'leff it jus so',  :laughing7: ...but then why issue an update, eh?

Glad to hear that it was resolved though.  :icon_thumleft:
