I present this case to you:
Deciding to take a stab back at MCSE, I decide to build a slim PC with a new
MSI G41 motherboard, a slim case donated by daniboy, a Pentium D 940 CPU i got from a customer, some RAM I have lying around unused and an unused hard drive.
so I assembled the build.
when I power on PC using a Crucial Ballistix 1066 DDR2 RAM, it undergoes a cycle where it turns on for 2 seconds, turns off, turn on for a split seconds and turns on again, and the cycle repeats.
Thinking it is the PSU I swap for a known working one. no dice. Tried a working Corsair and some value crucial. Same thing.
take out RAM. I get the beeping but it still power cycling on its own.
Only when I take out everything an power up the board by itself doe the issue stop.
I say "odd". I happen to have a Core 2 Duo E400 courtesy of Netizen, so I pop that in and try to boot.
same thing using the Crucial and Corsair 1066 RAM, but miraculously it works fine with the value DDR2-667 RAM. I was fully able to install server 2003, install all driver and updates without a hiccup.
But I still need to establish what is causing this issue so I tack back with the faster RAM. Back to the power on/off cycle.
Even updating the BIOS is of no use.
