Problem with logon on XP Pro
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:57:46 PM »
Ok the "Home" pc here never had a user password on it, you just logon straight to the desktop when it starts up...

I did not have antivirus software on it because I forgot to so sue me :P

Last night moms plugged in in a flash drive from work to do some documents(this is the first time she's done this) lo and behold the computer when restarted is prompting me for a password to logon when there was no password in the first place....

I am thinking it's a virus...any takers on this one?

Tried using the Hirens Boot cd to reset it, got the prompt to reset it, SAME BS is happening.  Yes safe mode does the same crap...

U tried getting into the built in admin account, which hopefully should not be the one u use on a day to day basis.

The funny thing is, I don't know how to get into the admin account. Nah the admin account wasn't being used on a day to day basis.

Any pointers on how to get into the admin account will be appreciated

My next option is just to use the mini xp in Hirens and move off important documents to the other partition and then do a re-install of windows.

I'm not that good as yet when it comes to solving logon to windows problems  :ko:

Normaly the Hirens boot cd sorts out your login issues. You tried using the other tool on the cd for resetting the password? There shoould be an option to enable the admin account and change its password. (wih i remembered the name of it)

I tried resetting the password of the user account that is used day to day, got to the option to reset the password. When I put in the new password it gets as far as showing the wallpaper on the desktop and then immediately logs off and I'm back at please enter your password.....will have to look again for that option to enable admin account...

if you using the log on 'home' screen hit CTRL+ALT+DEL 2wice and enter 'administrator' as the username and no password it should boot you in if you didn't disable it.

and it have too many free antivirus that you should forget so we nah take that as an excuse...says you lazyorz :P

also disable autorun, and when opening flash drives watch the icon, if it not the default removable drive icon then right click and explore it enable viewing of hidden files and windows protected system files, delete all hidden files, it helps with most of those USB virii.

AND GET A AV...

Ah Reddos...you self.  Let this be a lesson.  Before you solve the logon problem,
make sure you completely clean that drive of any viruses.  Use the trial version of NOD32 if you have to.
You can use it fully for 30 days.

As for the password issue, try booting into safe mode, and you -should- be able to get access
to the admin account.  (Try using Hiren's to completely clear the password for the admin acct first).
