CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W vs. Antec TruePower New TP-650 650W
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:52:36 PM »
hey guys i need to get a new power supply i'm currently considering these two:

CORSAIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

ANTEC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371021

What I've realized so far is that the ANTEC costs more than the Corsair by 7 dollars..lol.. from amazon it has 2 more amps (54 opposed to 52 on the corsair ) on the 12v its bronze certified and semi modular.

The corsair on the other hand according to Nephilim just told me is more baddermen :s whatever that means oh it its 7 dollars cheaper ..lol..and looks better, supposedly has better build quality and has only one 12v rail opposed to the four way split rail on the antec also may have longer cables as its going in a cooler master cm690.

having some difficulty coming to a decision any advice would be greatly appreciated........

Honestly, yuh cyah go wrong with either. Both are high quality PSUs. I've had the Antec TPQ-850 850W for a year now and haven't had a single problem with it. So I can attest to the quality of Antec's products.

O/C the antec has 54 amps on the 12 man not 94 thanks for the adv tho swinging in the way of antec the semi modular construction has me siding with it right now but the corsair had got some great reviews tho....

this just crept in as well .....
Antec 750 cheaper than the 650 wtf ??

Two types of psu's I stay away from...multi rail and modular. Modular supplies introduce more resistance and drops voltage levels not to mention over time those connectors can become loose which could lead to sparking and well...no need to tell yall why that's a bad idea. That might be a good idea for short term builds or if you dont plan to change your rig once its built, but if you do a lot of upgrades that require constant plugging and unplugging, well...yea. Straight cable ftw. Learn some cable management. Its not brain surgery.

Its a common mistake thinking that the rating of each rail on a multiple rail psu added up represents the total output of the psu. Here, you've got a situation where a lot of the power output is trapped. For instance, if your cpu uses 9 amps out of the 12v+2 rail which deliver a maximum of say 20 amps, the other 11amps are gone...unusable...non transferable to any of the other rails. Use more than the rated output on the other rails and its bedtime for that psu...and quite possibly some of your parts. With a single 12v rail, you get what they say you get.

In the majority of cases, we never have enough components connected to a 20a max rail at any one time so this never becomes a problem, but the way I look at it, why take the chance? Personally, I use a Corsair tx750w. There's no way im going multi rail/modular.

thanks Capt but i don't plan to do much plugging and unplugging but what u say makes sense so now i back in the middle well i will order it at the end of the month so i have some thinking to do

go corsair you know you want that sh1t!

:P

I disagree with capn's view on modular PSUs though

the extra resistance is not so much that it introduces that much resistance.
in fact, if your system temp is high, the temperature rise within the case and in turn the wires that lead from the PSU actually causes more rise in resistance than the modular connector. PSUs with long wires would also cause more resistance than the connectors.

the verdict is still pending on the sturdiness of the connectors themselves. so far mine are still pretty rigid, even with all the plugging unplugging with parts and drives. however if the molex connectors are any indication then yes after a while they may very well go.

im with cap on the single rail approach the main reason for multi was to get around the atx standard at the time which prevented any 1 12v rail from carrying more than i think it was 18-20As, it's been revised since then.

Very possible @ high sys temp causing more resistance, but added to that, you have modular connectors that adding insult to injury.

I'm sure that whatever added resistance is negligible, im just nitpicking. As for the connector sturdiness, a loose connector would definitely cause your system to cut off if u like to poke around while its on, if you bump the table/platform it on too hard, or worse, short off, spark and burn. Again, its anyone's guess how much wear it takes to make a situation like that, but as if molex's werent enough to worry about, there's possible modular connector failage too?
