Dalit woman commits suicide to evade rape attempt

A Dalit woman committed suicide Saturday by setting herself on fire in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad district to evade a rape attempt by her neighbour, police said.

Family members alleged that she took the extreme step to evade a rape attempt by a neighbour in Faizabad, about 150 km from here.

'The woman, in her dying statement to the magistrate, seconded the allegations made by her husband Rajaram, but died before naming the person,' Faizabad police chief R.K.S. Rathore told IANS.

The woman stated that she was alone in the house when a youth scaled the wall and tried to grab her, said Rathore.

'She rushed towards the kitchen and set herself on fire,' he added.

The police have detained a youth of the same locality for questioning, an official said.

Seriously....of all the things to resort to to get away from rape. I suppose her legs were broken to rule out running away, perhaps? And even if you compare the two evils, which is worse, being raped, or blowing yourself to kingdom come?

Yeesh. This lady needs a damn Darwin Award.

I won't say so, given how people there may look upon a rape victim...it really may seem to the person that death was a better alternative, without undergoing the public shame that would have befallen her, had the act been successful.

Well in the same vein as SPK - even being a rape victim is shameful in that part of the world -

The stigma attached to almost being a rape victim might not exactly be a whole lot less. "Harlotry" is despised in such communities and cultures.

WE may pound her for the method of of suicide, or for committing suicide outright, but being a rape victim in India is worse than death.

Fire (which is the reaction of fuel, oxygen and heat NOT the light energy by-product known as a flame) spreads at 9 times its original size per second. Even if a house were NEXT to a fire station it could STILL burn before the firefighters could stop it. A woman setting herself on fire... well depends on what she was wearing, what she used to start the fire, what was around her (air composition, flammable products, etc) stop tuck and roll very well could have totally failed her.
