Update 6/17/08: After some tears, I finally settled on an Intel e8400 Core 2 Duo CPU and an EVGA nForce 780i SLI MB. I re-ran 3DMark06 and replaced my previous result with the new one.


Update 6/14/08: I upgraded to a PNY Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB graphics card. I re-ran 3DMark06 and replaced my previous result with the new one.


Update: I am now running Windows XP. I re-ran 3DMark06 and PCMark05. I replaced my old results with the new ones. It looks like I will be moving up a couple slots in the rankings. 


This is the first time I have run any benchmarks so I may have left out some stuff along the way. I used the free versions of benchmark software. As a result, 3DMark 06 and PCMark 05 required separate online pages for the results.

Pretty ok scores, but you could have gotten A LOT MORE performance for your money.

seems like he went with the 4 gigs
and thus wasted about 667 megs of ram there hmm

and those are decent scores

probably more limited by yur hardware choices than the os yu running

so ergo, vista maybe as viable as xp for gaming?

Yes very good scores, but not good enough for the $$ spent. Vista is only slightly worse for gaming drawing from the fact that I get only a couple hundred points less in 3dmark 06 on Vista.

3DMark is NOT a good indicator of how your system will play games... hence why its considered SYNTHETIC benchmarks. And would you all stop ponging de man about performance? There are games that actually show higher FPS in Vista than XP surprisingly and then there is DX10 which XP lacks. I too agreed that he shoulda gone better video and less RAM but too late, so all in all nice scores and another rig to the GATT listing for ranking.

We will, but do take into account that its alot more than just 3DMark scores, hence all the other benchies and also we'll have catergories. I've sent you a PM already we should discuss this further out of the forums.

What did you do differently this time to fix the problem?

New MB, EVGA nForce 780i SLI with DDR2 support. I used my old RAM, 4096MB Corsair DDR2 PC6400 (4x1024). How much of a boost I would get with faster DDR2 and what would you guys recommend? I'm running XP, by the way. I dropped Vista a long time ago.
