AMD Standardizing gaming platforms
« on: May 19, 2008, 03:35:46 AM »
http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3312&p=1

AMD is making it easier for the average person to enjoy gaming by their 'GAME!' initiative.

Basically, every PC with a 'GAME' logo has at least the ability to run every major title at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 .

The  whole purpose of buying ATI was to be able to sell 3 chips with every PC  (cpu, gpu, mobo chipset) , not just 1 .

And if you look at it this way  : Every AMD PC from now on has at least integrated graphics that could beat a radeon 9600/ geforce 4.
That means for the low end especially , AMD>Intel

With Nvidia insulting Intel so much these days , i think its doubtful they could pull off a similar platform strategy.

Read about this over at inq and I have a problem. Slapping an "ultra" sticker on a machine with a hd3850 is misleading at best. Does the word "ultra" not mean the same as it used to? People are going to expect that thing to pwn for a long time when in truth it never really pwned to begin with. Oh and there are those that will watch you with your Core2 @ 3.2ghz, 8800gt and 4gb ram and say "my system pwns yours ive got an ultrahhhh.

Yes, I know this initiative is meant for "people between the hardcore techie and people that make your brain hurt when you overhear them talk at the store (Does that CPU come in different colors? Oooh, blue lights!", but I think people are going to  be disappointed when they put on a game and it autodetects to some high settings and lags like hell. Or maybe it wont lag now, but in a few short months.

It IS a good strategy though. They're gonna be making significantly more dosh per system, a very significant achievement if they're gonna be pulling themselves out of the pit.

I doubt Crysis will be on that list NGW, however WOW, UT3 and perhaps SC2 may be on that list. If they are, the casual gamer is covered for the more popular in each genre right there. I think it's a step in the right direction and keep in mind Intel has been doing the whole CPU+GPU+chipset for a LONG time now. It's just AMD is focusing on the gamer more than Intel as intel-integrated ALWAYS SUCKED. I also agree, Nvidia is too much intel's throat lately to devise such a scheme. Intel will prolly combat it when Larabee comes out next year. Or was it later this year...

She mustbe write the words "Bachelor Degree" on a paper and convinced herself through some sort or extreme masochism that its a real degree.

Either that or she did a degree in bartending or something lol. No way she could do a real degree and not know what a....that is ridiculous hahahaahhah  "what does that do". Priceless.

lol @ a machine getting tagged "ultra" today and being crap 6 months later.

Reminds me of finding an old "Boot" magazine and laughing at the specs of some "kick ass" machines back in the day. Rigs not even fit for a foot stool now that commanded US$3000.00 price tags.

I think in the next 3-4 years ,if initiatives like this are successful , we could be looking at a PC gaming boom .

At that point , the average mid range machine would be much faster than the PS3/Xbox 360.

Assuming Intel starts making reliable graphics solutions.. or buys Nvidia, almost all PCs will be on par with , or superior to the consoles .

All of a sudden PC gaming is a much larger market than console gaming, and we'll see a large number of ports and exclusive titles.

Depends on where they graduating from and how inclined they were to take initiative in their respective fields.

So very true eh, I've encountered people that have their degrees in Comp.Sci and whatnot, and they could barely do anything!
Ask dem to configure the wireless network - "Where's the hub?"
Ask dem to disable an account in Active Directory - "I can't access it!" (USB Keyboard was unplugged to deter other simple users from accessing the server).
Ask dem to get a file off a file server on a network - "I don't have clearance to access it" (And they have admin rights which gives them full clearance to access anything on the server....)

I could go on....

But that is why, yes, I am doing my degree, but I try to get in practical works, plus I teach on the side, which means I know my stuff, I can implement, and I know how to train users (and deal with all the n00bish questions).

Iam super duper ready to handle some more certs,
the only thing of any consequence iam learning is business crap and system development

Personally, I am just doing the degree to show that I have the capacity to learn...my certs and experience will be my true demonstration of what I'm capable of. Too many people have it backwards...
