XPS survives Alienware attack

Dell does a Ripley

By Sylvie Barak: Wednesday, 14 May 2008, 9:20 AM

IT SEEMS THAT the Wall Street Journal may have been rather hasty with its cry of "XPS is dead, long live Alienware", as Dell issued a statement denying that the XPS brand would be scrapped.

On Dell's blog, spokeswoman Anne Camden, after disparaging the intelligence of gamers with "I’m guessing that most hardcore gamers don't actually read the WSJ", wrote "Dell XPS and Alienware are both great brands... and both will live on".

Camden's post went on to say, however, that Dell was going to "invest like crazy in product development, design and engineering to propel Alienware as the premier gaming brand in the future".

After plugging Alienware for several paragraphs, Camden went on to slam the WSJ for its rumourmongering, claiming that the XPS was still near and dear to Dell's heart "with its heritage of premium performance". Camden also said that the XPS had now moved well beyond gaming, catering to the laptop, all in one and multimedia markets too.

Like a Rottweiler with a bone, Camden was not letting the WSJ off the hook so easily, indignantly stating that the "XPS gaming systems will remain an important part of our gaming product portfolio. We don't plan an early phase-out of these systems, as the WSJ incorrectly stated and, in fact, will continue to refresh them to keep them on the front edge of gaming".

So there, WSJ. Game on XPS.
