Get Good Grades or no games for you!

GameStop Manager Refuses to Sell to Stupid Kids

A GameStop manager in Dallas has been suspended for refusing to sell videogames to schoolkids with poor grades.

"He needs to be reading a book. He knows how to play Madden before he knows how to do his ABCs and 123s - that's backwards," said store manager Brandon Scott, who imposed a policy of refusing to sell games to school-aged children unless an adult would confirm the child's good grades. As a result, he has so far refused about two dozen game sales, he said, although most of them had returned with proof of good grades to make their purchase.

While many local parents applauded the move, GameStop has suspended Scott following reports of his actions. In a statement, the company said it is "learning about and evaluating Mr. Scott's concept. As always, GameStop maintains its corporate commitment to assisting parents and other consumers in making informed choices." Scott himself said he wasn't certain whether the suspension was the result of his policy, which he first implemented earlier this summer, or because he spoke to the media about it.

Along with his grades policy, Scott maintained other self-imposed rules of conduct in his store. "They know when they come in here, they do not curse, they do not use the N-word, pull your clothes up," he said. He also said he'd buy a brand new game for any student who showed him a straight-A report card with a teacher's signature and a parent present.

The suspension has not lessened Scott's commitment to "making a difference," he said. "I wouldn't say rebel, but I can be rebellious. I can fight for what I believe in."

Well, from a business standpoint, I'd see why Gamestop would suspend the guy. It's not good for business if you're going to turn down potential sales.

From another standpoint, though, I think it's good that he's trying something to encourage kids out there to get good grades, and, more importantly, to behave themselves when they're buying games from him. I applaud that 'Good Grades for Good Games' strategy.

Though....personally, I wouldn't have gone so far as to turn away kids who would want to buy my games, because, for one, it's not exactly my place to do something like that, and two, I'm not really in the business of crushing kids' spirits like that. Ironic, considering that I'm an advocate of tough love and all.

Still, pretty awesome of the guy for trying to make a difference in a few kids' lives.
I think Gamestop made a step in the right direction when they said that they'll give his idea some thought.

I suppose he's taking the moral high-ground or whatever with his 'policy', which, IMO, is pushing it a bit. This however brings me to the next question...in alllll of Dallas, NO-ONE else sells video games? Nah man.

I could just imagine lil Johnny strolling in to buy his copy of Crysis, only to have the manager ask him "what grade you got in your last exam son?" If I was the little boy I would go "WTFF are you talking about b1tch gimme Crysis dammit I wanna kich some alien but", promptly pick up my bike (or walk to the nearest game shop, because dammit the game is THAT good) and fix meh mix.

i doh think it woudl be much of a problem... notice most of the 2 dozen he refused come back and got the games they wanted...

from my experience gamers (good gamers at least) tend to on the higher end of the spectrum in class...

His stupid ass was just looking to get suspended.
It's not his place to be the grade police.

Funniest is all the parents saying what a good idea it was. MIND YOUR OWN DAMN KIDS.
It's bad enough that parents want the government to do their job, now they want Store managers to do it too?

Noble idea, but poor execution.  He was definitely out of place.  Unfortunately, the right thing is
not always the popular (or in this case 'proftiable') thing.

The company is in that business to make money, not help raise people's kids, so I can see
why they took that action.  He was actually costing them money.

A good point, Exar. Take Chakra for that.
Personally, I think parents these days are just being annoying. Not all of them, mind you.
If they're not being the over-sensitive soccer moms that kill the joys of life for everyone, they're the finger pointers of society that blame everything on God's green Earth but themselves when something goes horribly wrong with their child.

Think about this case scenario if you will.....two parents became addicted to videogames, and they played it so much, that they completely ignored their two children, not even doing as much as feeding them at all. One even got her hair caked with cat urine. When the kids are taken away from them, what do they blame?

The VIDEOGAMES.
Here's a case where the parents were being obvious a**holes towards their kids, and the first thing they're going to point fingers at is 'whether or not video game addiction should be termed a disease'.

But, I digress.
I can see why parents applauded the man for trying to instill good values in their children, but, you know......still isn't the guy's place to do something that the parents should be fielding.
