The really epic books tend to get made into miniseries, rather than movies.

Consider "North and South"  Took forever.

Or the grandaddy of ALL miniseries, past and present, "Roots".  Almost as good as the book.  Almost.

That said, "The Godfather" is a possible exception to the rule that movie adaptations cannot be as good as books.

I agree wholeheartedly. Some great novels such as Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, JFK: the conspiracy by Lennard Brown, The 3 Msuketeers / The Man in the Iron mask by Alexander Dumas, Moby Dick by Herman Mellville and Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle have all been made into movies which fall horrendously short of the standard of storytelling set by the books.

But don't take my word for it children, put down the controllers, keyboards, cell phones and porn magazine and go out and read some of these books. Your brain may thank you after.

it's tru movies can't beat the books.
but come on,u see (im going with the most popular things here...) a tolkien on sale and just pass it by,then u see the movie advertise, its more appealing.but the book is always better.i must say.

small fine print does not seem attractive to the eye. A big flashy poster with some huge star and special effects is far more appealing than a small drab book. That is why books have flashy covers. But if you have the patience and intelligence to get past the superficial, you are in for a real treat.
