Sunderland went top of the Championship table after coming from behind to see off play-off hopefuls Southampton.
Marek Saganowski put Saints ahead with a volley on 67 minutes - his sixth goal in four matches.
But Carlos Edwards equalised 10 minutes later with a sensational drive from 25 yards that clipped the underside of the crossbar on its way in.
And as the game looked to be petering out to a draw, substitute Grant Leadbitter crashed home from 25 yards.
