Halo 2 - coming to XP
Wow, here's some interesting news... Falling Leaf Systems has announced that they will be providing compatibility software that will allow Halo 2, an exclusive Vista title, to run on Windows XP. If you order Halo 2 through their site, you'll get the compatibility libraries FREE when they're released (current estimate is July). Not sure how they plan to make any money... but this seems like a pretty cool thing for folks who'd love to play Halo 2, but can't justify the shift to Vista right now.

News / Microsoft Sails into Portable Gaming with Argo?
« on: July 11, 2006, 10:00:16 PM »
Rumors of a portable gaming device from Microsoft have been flowing unabated since late last year, when it was speculated that Xbox co-founder J Allard may be at the helm of Microsoft's effort to challenge Apple's iPod as well as portable consoles from Nintendo and Sony with one device. Last week, news sources reported on alleged music capabilities and services that Microsoft may plan to offer. Today, The Seattle Times dug up some more details about the portable device, which is apparently codenamed Argo after Jason's mythological ship.

According to Seattle Times writer Brier Dudley, Argo will indeed be a gaming device and will make use of Microsoft's XNA standard, intended to streamline cross-platform game development--provided, of course, the platforms in question are from Microsoft. Argo will also reportedly have wi-fi capability out of the box, no surprise given the feature is standard in both Nintendo DS and PSP.

Dudley also claims that Argo is not one product, but rather an ambitious line of Xbox-branded portable electronic devices and software products. This would suggest that the alleged product shot revealed today most likely does not depict a gaming unit, with its vertically oriented screen and distinct shortage of buttons.

Interestingly, Microsoft has not shied away from the portable gaming arena. So far, the company has supported Nintendo portables by way of first and third party developers. Microsoft-owned Rare has announced its support for Nintendo DS, and Backbone Entertainment's upcoming DS title MechAssault: Phantom War is based on a Microsoft-owned property and branded with the Microsoft Game Studios logo. It is unknown how heavily Microsoft plans to invest in the portable market as a platform holder, whether the company will indeed target core gamers, or whether it attempt to make further inroads into the casual market as it has done with its Xbox Live Arcade and MSN Games brands.

News / Sony Slapped With Back Taxes
« on: July 03, 2006, 04:23:36 PM »
Reuters reports that Sony has been ordered to pay 27.9B yen ($243M) in taxes incurred between March 2000 and March 2005. Apparently, the company engaged in undervalued trasnactions between its gaming, CD, and movie branches located in Japan and those located in the United States. This resulted in the company taking in 74.4B yen ($650M) in income which was not reported to Japanese tax authorities.

Sony and gaming subsidiary Sony Computer Entertainment claim the order was "unsatisfactory" and plan to appeal the demands.

News / Metal Slug 4 & 5 for PS2, Xbox
« on: March 15, 2005, 02:04:00 AM »

WALL, NJ. - March 14, 2005 - SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION, the US publishing arm of the SNK PLAYMORE CORPORATION, announced today that the company will release a special METAL SLUG 4 & 5 bundle pack for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft. The METAL SLUG 4 & 5 bundle pack will ship in early Summer 2005. Each will have a suggested retail price of $39.99.

In METAL SLUG 4, a cyber-terrorist group has unleashed an international computer virus with the goal of hijacking the world's militaries. Join Marco, Fio, and new METAL SLUG team members, Trevor and Nadia, as they try to stop the distribution of the virus before it's too late.

A disc containing METAL SLUG secrets has been stolen in METAL SLUG 5, after a research installation is attacked by unknown forces. Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio must enter "The Corridor of Fire" to recover the secrets and destroy the paramilitary syndicate known as the Ptolemaic Army.

"This is a must own collection for PlayStation 2 and Xbox owners who love the METAL SLUG franchise" said Ben Herman, SNK PLAYMORE USA CORPORATION President. "METAL SLUG has always been one of SNK's most popular franchises, and METAL SLUG 4 and 5 are two of the best in the series."

News / Fable PC Bound
« on: March 11, 2005, 01:52:40 AM »
GameSpot is reporting that last year's slightly underwhelming Xbox RPG Fable is heading to the PC as Fable: The Lost Chapters. The PC version will include new content including additional quests, extra regions to explore and new armor and weapons to use. Fable: The Lost Chapters is scheduled for release this fall. IGN has some additional information.

The biggest addition is likely the huge new content portion of the game. In a meeting yesterday, Molyneux reported that the game will be a third bigger than the Xbox version of the game. While he doesn't want to give away details on the extra parts of the gameplay just yet, he did mention that players who noticed the door right outside the Heroes Guild in the Xbox game will have also noticed it was closed and locked. The PC version will open that door up along with everything behind it. Apparently that includes a dragon and a completely new land for players to explore.
