Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / Networkin help
« on: March 15, 2005, 02:37:52 AM »
I've used cat5e for gigabit. It worked but then again the cables were no more than 6m lon and plug directly into the switch. The machine was running a dual port NIC in a team config. for laod balancing and fail over.

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / @TI SLI

I think it's good that ATi is bring an SLi type product to the market but i can't help but remeber  when they tried a similar stunt on a single card a few yrs ago. It was a mess! At least  NVidia has some technical know how to bring it to the table since they bought out  3DFX who, if my memory serves me correctly, pioneered this type of technology.

Software, Security, Programming and Internet / WineX - Cedaga
« on: March 15, 2005, 01:52:05 AM »
I am trying to play games on Linux. Simple Mepis 3.3 was the distribution of choice since reviews were good and it was described as the closest thing to Windows. Just about the only game that worked was Quake 3. The problem is, I can't get Cedaga (WineX) to work. I follow the instruction given at http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsect...hp?articleid=45 to install Cedaga. The install went a little ruff. First there was the 59 MB of package updates that were necessary. Secondly some linkages could not be formed because libGL.a was present in some directory. I simply moved it, continued with the install and moved it back. Now the bloody program refuses to work! Its install location is not listed in the path so I have to type in the path to it to start it and when it starts, it can’t find libntdll.so which exists in one of its sub directories. If it’s any help, the pc is a Dell Latitude C840 (now it a Inspiron 8200 since the mother board was replace by Fujitsu) with:

512 MB DDR RAM PC2100
40 GB HD (3.5 GB swap partition and a the rest is a single Reiser partition)
Geforce 440 Go 32MB Graphics card (Mepis came with 3D accelerated drivers and the latest reference NVidia drivers don’t install).
PCtel modem (Drivers were install but the modem still doesn’t work)
3COM 920 network card
24x10x24 CDRW
8X DVD
P4 1.7 mobile processor

Can anyone help me to get Cedaga to work?

Software, Security, Programming and Internet / the linux arcade

I am playing with Mephis and have played with Suse 9.1, Red Hat (multiple versions), Mandrake and a custom distro from Abit. By far, the easiest to setup and use for a desktop is Suse. In terms of speed, they're all just as slow! As a sever without X, Red Hat rocks and has some of the greatest support from the company and forums out there. On a side note, if people want a speedy/stable OS with a GUI for X86, you can't beat Windows 2000.
