Software, Security, Programming and Internet / I've had spyware but never a virus, Bill Gates says« on: October 06, 2004, 09:22:45 AM »
MICROSOFT SUPREMO Bill Gates has astounded IT hacks by telling them that he has never had a computer virus. (yeah right)
We assume that he doesn't open his own emails, or is not actually connected to the Internet, but Bill told eWeek that he had been hit by adware and malware from time to time. Bill told them that Vole was planning to shell out "hundreds of millions" of dollars to tackle the problem of spyware and malware. Of course who is one of the biggest distributors of spyware? Come on down William Gates. Windows XP, or possibly more exactly Internet Explorer has shipped with Alexa which some consider to be spyware. It is the first spyware that any decent checker will find and contains spyware-like agents. It is a MS Internet Explorer key that points to a MS DLL and MS HTML file. This redirects to a page, and that page redirects to the Alexa web site and gives information about your web surfing for statistics purposes to fuel the Alexa ranking system. It is not certain what Amazon.com which runs Alexa does with this data , if anything, and the Vole does not tell you that it is included in the software. If Bill was serious about killing spyware this should be the first thing to cull from Windows and it would cost him nothing 11

An adult toy shut down a major regional airport for almost an hour on Monday when it was mistaken for a bomb, police said.
The vibrating object was discovered at Mackay Airport by a security officer who noticed the suspicious package inside a rubbish bin at the terminal cafeteria at 9.15am (AEST), a police spokeswoman said. Cafeteria manager Lynne Bryant said her staff had been cleaning tables when they noticed a strange humming noise coming from the rubbish bin. "It was rather disconcerting when the rubbish bin started humming furiously," she said. "We called security and next minute everybody was being evacuated while they checked it out." The police spokeswoman said the terminal was evacuated immediately. Passengers who had arrived on a recent flight, check-in staff, cafeteria employees and hire car personnel were all forced to leave. "Another two flights were expected to land at that stage but alternate arrangements were made for the passengers to collect their luggage away from the terminal," the spokeswoman said. Advertisement Advertisement She said the emergency situation was revoked just before 10am when the package was identified as an adult novelty device. Ms Bryant said at the time of the upheaval the airport had been quite busy with two main flights due in and out of the airport - wreaking havoc with people's schedules. She said in retrospect the humming sounded exactly like a vibrator - but it was better to be safe then sorry. "You can't afford to take chances," Ms Bryant said. 12
Ole Talk / Denmark to Claim N Pole, Hopes to Strike Oil and maybe SANTA« on: October 06, 2004, 07:41:43 AM »
Denmark aims to claim the North Pole and hunt for oil in high Arctic regions that may become more accessible because of global warming, the Science Ministry said on Monday.
It said Denmark would send an expedition to try to prove the seabed beneath the Pole was a natural continuation of Greenland, the world's biggest island and a Danish territory whose northern tip is just 450 miles from the Pole. Science Minister Helge Sander said last week success would give Denmark access to "new resources such as oil and natural gas." The potential return would outweigh the 150 million crowns ($25 million) that Denmark has allocated to the investigation. The Danish bid rests on a U.N. convention allowing coastal nations to claim rights to offshore seabed resources. Countries that ratify it have 10 years to prove they have a fair claim to the offshore territory and its resources. "First we have to make the scientific claim. After that there will be a political process with the other countries," said Science Ministry official Thorkild Meedom. Other claimants to the area, with the Pole itself, include Russia, Canada and Norway. The United States may also make a claim. "We're seeing a growing focus on and fight for the resources in the Arctic, especially as the global warming makes the region more accessible," said Samantha Smith, director of the WWF environmental group's Arctic Program. She said nations around the Arctic should sign a treaty to regulate access to oil, fisheries and possible new shipping lanes through the Arctic as the ice retreats. Global warming (news - web sites), blamed by scientists mainly on emissions of carbon dioxide from cars and factories, has thinned the ice and U.N. projections indicate further shrinkage in coming decades. Areas of interest for Denmark are three patches of seabed around Greenland and two around the Faroe Islands. But experts said it could take years to sort out a tangle of overlapping claims in the Arctic. At the other end of the globe in Antarctica, several countries have also claimed slices of the continent but lack international blessing. 13
Ole Talk / RIP, Rodney Dangerfield« on: October 06, 2004, 07:39:30 AM »
lets give a moment of silence for this comedic genius
Rodney Dangerfield, the bug-eyed comic whose self-deprecating one-liners brought him stardom in clubs, television and movies and made his lament ''I don't get no respect'' a catchphrase, died Tuesday. He was 82. Mr. Dangerfield, who fell into a coma after undergoing heart surgery, died at 1:20 p.m., said publicist Kevin Sasaki. Mr. Dangerfield had a heart valve replaced Aug. 25 at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center. Sasaki said in a statement that Mr. Dangerfield suffered a small stroke after the operation and developed infectious and abdominal complications. But in the past week he had emerged from the coma, the publicist said. ''When Rodney emerged, he kissed me, squeezed my hand and smiled for his doctors,'' Mr. Dangerfield's wife, Joan, said in the statement. The comic is also survived by two children from a previous marriage. As a comic, Mr. Dangerfield -- clad in a black suit, red tie and white shirt with collar that seemed too tight -- convulsed audiences with lines such as: ''When I was born, I was so ugly that the doctor slapped my mother''; ''When I started in show business, I played one club that was so far out my act was reviewed in Field and Stream''; and ''Every time I get in an elevator, the operator says the same thing to me: 'Basement?''' In a 1986 interview, he explained the origin of his ''respect'' trademark: ''I had this joke: 'I played hide and seek; they wouldn't even look for me.' To make it work better, you look for something to put in front of it: I was so poor, I was so dumb, so this, so that. I thought, 'Now what fits that joke?' Well, 'No one liked me' was all right. But then I thought, a more profound thing would be, 'I get no respect.''' He tried it at a New York club, and the joke drew a bigger response than ever. He kept the phrase in the act. After hearing him perform years later, Jack Benny remarked: ''Me, I get laughs because I'm cheap and 39. Your image goes into the soul of everyone.'' Mr. Dangerfield had a strange career in show business. At 19 he started as a standup comedian, making only a fair living. Married at 27, he decided he couldn't support a family on his meager earnings. He returned to comedy at 42 and began to attract notice. He appeared on ''The Tonight Show'' with Johnny Carson more than 70 times. After his first major film role in ''Caddyshack,'' he began starring in his own movies 14

FREDERICK, Maryland (AP) -- Workers repairing a home damaged in a tornado discovered nearly two dozen boxes filled with child pornography. The homeowner remained jailed Monday on $96,000 bail.
Robert L. Medvee, 52, was charged Friday with 48 counts of creating computer images of child pornography and 48 counts of possession of child pornography, sheriff's Deputy Jennifer Bailey said. The seized material -- computer discs, videotapes and photographs -- filled 20 to 24 boxes, Frederick County State's Attorney Scott Rolle said. "It was the largest seizure of child pornography I've ever seen," Rolle said. "We had to bring in a pickup truck to get all of it out of there." Rolle said more charges could be filed. It was not clear if Medvee had an attorney in the case. Workers found the pornography while doing repairs to the house, damaged September 17 by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan, authorities said. Medvee was staying with friends at the time, police said. yuh see fellas pornography will get yuh in trouble 16

Woman Police Say Sold Stones to Rioters Pleads No Contest
ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) - A woman who police say sold stones to rioters in a southwest Michigan city last year and used the money to pay her cable television bill has pleaded no contest to inciting a riot. Yuolanda Taylor, 32, entered the plea Monday. A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. She is free on bail, but faces up to 10 years in prison at her sentencing Nov. 15. The city of Benton Harbor was devastated by two nights of rioting last June sparked by the death of a black motorcyclist during a high-speed police chase. Twenty-one houses, many vacant, were destroyed. Police said Taylor toted rocks through a riot-wracked neighborhood, selling small ones for $1 each and bigger ones for $5. Prosecutors said the rocks were thrown at police. Taylor told police she collected about $70 selling rocks, but quit when she got hit by one herself. (jah doh sleep) 17

Action figure and cartoon hero He-Man is returning to the big screen in a new movie.
Variety reports that 'Face/Off' helmer John Woo will direct and produce the live-action film. Dolph Lundgren previously starred in a 1987 He-Man spin-off called 'Masters of the Universe' that also marked one of the early movie appearances of 'Friends' star Courteney Cox. Woo is also set to direct wrestling legend Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in an adaptation of the classic video game 'Spy Hunter'. i think even CATWOMAN, GARFIELD or SOULPLANE will be better than this 18
