Study: Gaming fulfills basic psychological needs
« on: December 29, 2006, 11:27:46 AM »
taken from a blog off of technorati
http://wiilee.com/2006/12/29/study-gaming-fulfills-basic-psychological-needs/

Imagine this: it’s 3:30 a.m. and the lights are out. In front of the television, locked in his room, is a hardcore gamer. Eyes red and palms sweaty, he’s already loss track of the time. All he could think of is the futuristic AK-47 on his right hand and the enemies lurking in the shadows. He’s forty five years old.

Creepy, huh? Certainly, we are all not like that. But the point is, games has this certain charm that is painful to let go of. Sure, we know how fun it is to play games, but the psychologists over at the University of Rochester kicked it up a notch for us.

According to their latest study, the fun of playing games is actually rooted in fulfilling basic psychological needs. The study was done in collaboration with Immersyve, Inc., a virtual environment think tank. More than 1,000 players served as the population and the systems utilized in the study included various consoles and some MMORPGs. Study lead author Richard M. Ryan has this brief explanation:

We think there’s a deeper theory than the fun of playing. It’s our contention that the psychological ‘pull’ of games is largely due to their capacity to engender feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Some video games not only motivate further play but also can be experienced as enhancing psychological wellness at least short-term. Not all video games are created equal in their ability to satisfy basic psychological needs. But those that do may be the best at keeping players coming back.

The study was published in the university’s journal Motivation and Emotion. Other co-authors include graduate student Andrew Przybylski and President of Immersyve and Doctor of Psychology Scott Rigby. And so with that said, gamers unite! Go and fulfill your psychological needs!

Games are bieng used by shrinks to analyze people , and help people deal with phobia. Games , like what we see in a Rorchach ink blot test , reflect our desires and fears. Plenty people who play WoW all day want to escape reality to a world where they have some kind of power and respect .
If someone went around killing all the women in GTA... obviously he has some mother or sister issues to deal with .  They can also help phobias, they make people play Half Life or Doom to deal with fear of spiders and the dark.. It helps alot if you can shoot your offending animal with a shotgun i guess.

Games are the new artform , and are here to stay .

What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.

well, if you scroll down to the bottom for the serial shooter mention like i did

yud note that they werent technically serial killers.
it started off with extortion, then went on about with some terror inducing killing but there actions dont fit the serial killing profile. Most specifically, their lack of a common denominator in their victims. was pretty random. and that common denominator in a serial killers victims, is what makes them a "serial" killer.

: D : D : D ?

I mean...I started at the most recent. Most people consider those two, boyd and muhammad, to be serial murderers. To be honest...I was SURE those dudes were white when it started. But that's besides the point... the above seems to be a better example.

PS: What actually correctly defines a serial killer is the amount of people killed, the frequency, which should and is usually in a relatively short time space, and then comes everything else, i.e. the common denominator, such as method of killing (which applies in the boyd-muhummad example), similarity of victims (which is the type that is, only somewhat erroneously, but not quite, defined as true serial killing and is highlighted the most because of the psychological aspect that fuels it) and etc...

Serial Killers are interesting...

Yes...

ammm being a serial killer, or having any anti social or sociopathical tendencies has not a frackin thing to do with race. Its a mental abnormality.

Yes there is a higher correlation of whites associated with this sort of crime, but it may be moreso linked to the fact that there simply are more white people available to do this sort of crime in america.

BTW ever wonder why America is mainly known for this sort of crime?

And in regards to there being no 'black serial killers'
