The "Force" versus The "Ring"
« on: November 23, 2006, 11:07:09 AM »
This has been a subject of argument.....well in my community for a long time. Both of these franchises are similar in the sense that they have brilliant characters, epic battles, memorable lines and quotes, sinister villians, and imagination.
The movies are similar to the point that they have marvelous costumes, impressive visual and sound effects, stunning cinematography and impressive musical scores......however the similarity ends with the fact that; LOTR was written years ago by a well known writer and it's more of a fantasy film, while Star Wars was created based on a mix of Flash Gordon serials and classic "Saturday morning matinees" (aas george Lucas eloquently states) and it's more of a science fiction type film.

Well baasically the question is.....between these to franchises which do you prefer the most......Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

I like Star Wars.

Oh, this is a which do you like more thread, lol

if it was a "which one is better" i would have been lik O.o wdf kinda question is that!!
lol you cant compare the star wars movies to the lotr movies, that would just be star wars bullying the poor elves and orcs.

but if there was a contention on the lotr books v the star wars books/movies, then that would be a truly epic battle.

So what about The Matrix and the "Power of The One"? What is we were all really connected to something like The Matrix?

My thoughts exactly...however there are a few noobs out there that claim that Legolas can take out Yoda and Anakin, and BS like that...
My Aunt claimed that the storyline in Star Wars is weak compared to the LOTR books.....it's rediculously weird..

oh and get this ....people claimed that Star Wars (especially the prequels) were BORING compared to LOTR...
those m*****f***ers

hmm story wise...lord of the rings books had more history, depth and fantasy than star wars.

movie wise the lotr movies were better than the prequels, but still cant touch empire strikes back IMO.

but in regards to what i prefer....I far prefer the star wars characters to those in lord of the rings,

nowhere in the lotr story is there a character as cool as han solo...

and as endearing as aragon and the other characters are, those books were a bit tacky (beautiful classics but a little drab as far as entertainment goes.)

Star wars storyline is a beautiful thing that i don't think is properly appreciated or rendered on screen... GL is a cool guy but he REAL fork up episodes 1-3 with weak dialogue and acting ,  Peter Jackson did a good job of portraying Tolkeins world even though he changed alot of it ...

Storyline wise LOTR is not really 'better' but tolkein defined the epic and high fiction with  LOTR , making the path for everyone to follow . Without LOTR elves would probably always have been short santa's helpers , dwarves likewise occupy a different light . Star Wars is less significant , it really started off as a second thought , george trying to do his own Sci fi in the lieu of flash gordon and its really just an extension of stories gone past  , LOTR was the product of years of work by tolkein  and while it was influenced by other things , it really was exceedingly original .

Gandalf V Yoda might be a kinda fair fight , gandalf surely could pwn a lower level Jedi but i doubt anyone in LOTR could come round yoda.

Wait...hold on...

...did you just put Anakin above Yoda?

GEEK FIGHT!

...so err.... anyway...

I'd have to say that Tolkien's world...the intricacies therin...they seem to be sculpted much better. The characters aren't necessarily as alive in Star Wars main storyline as they are in LotR. It's something really difficult to put to words but it's more along the lines of Tolkien truly wanting to create an overwhelming world and an anglo-saxon mythology and Lucas wanted to create a fantasy film. Also... Star Wars is much more science-fantasy than it is fiction...

However, the mythologies and "extended universes" (which, if you've noticed, has entered the lexicon of words used when refering to fictional works) of each are amazing in their own rights, though.

I can't say which I prefer. I just enjoy them both. They both take me to places more fascinating than here.

What can you do to end the hunger?
It's no surprise that many will die with the coming shortage of food
When there is no grain to feed the butchered cows
When there is nothing to feed yourselves...
Then you will see that money can't be eaten.

I prefer star wars to Lotr, but that's cause I have been a fan since the 80s.. whilst LOTR was only formally introduced to me when the movies came out (granted I vaguely remember the LOTF animated movie from TTT EONS ago) but thats a side. The two are VERY similar from a certain perspective (wizards to Jedi masters, rangers to jedi knights, etc) but I prefer the science-fantasy/fiction to the fantasy. Not that I think they are both excellent onto their own right, I just prefer star wars.
