We've received word that a respected member of our tech community, James Kim (whom many of you may know as CNET's senior editor of digital audio), and his family have gone missing. As we understand it, last weekend James, his wife Kati (above right), and his very young girls Penelope (left) and Sabine (baby), drove from their home in the SF Bay Area to Seattle. They were expected back some time Sunday, but were last heard from Saturday in or between Gold Beach or Portland, Oregon.
Kim Family Update #5: Mother and Children Located; Father Still Missing - 12/04/06On December 4, 2006 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Search & Rescue officials were notified that a vehicle and a female waving an umbrella were spotted by a helicopter search crew near the Rogue River in the area of Bear Camp Viewpoint off Bear Camp Road. This location is near the Curry / Josephine County line in Josephine County.The helicopter was able to land and verified that the mother and two children were alive. MERLIN, Ore. -- Airborne rescuers spotted a flash in a heavily wooded area and then caught a glimpse of a man laying face down they believe may be missing San Francisco resident James Kim in the Oregon wilderness Wednesday.Searchers were being lowered from the helicopter to assist the man.There was no immediate word on his condition.Clothing and bits of an Oregon map turned up Tuesday in a drainage in which search and rescue teams sought James Kim, 35, who has been missing since Saturday when he set out on foot to seek help for his family."He is a sharp individual and has a strong will to live," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said. "He has done a heck of a job out there."The clothing, which was wet, included two gray sweat shirts, a red T-shirt, a sock and a blue girl's skirt, said Lt. Gregg Hastings of the Oregon State Patrol. Family members said Kim had taken the items when he left.
