Myth adapted movies.
« on: November 15, 2006, 01:45:03 PM »
Everytime there is a new Pitt movie coming out in the cinema, I end up having an argument about Troy. Now, assuming that most people have seen Troy, I am suggesting that Troy was the best myth adaption, yeah?

When I say myth, I not really talking about your new myths like LOTR and Eragon. I mean like your classical myths - greek and what-not.

Troy was the best I find, excepting for one kinda big flaw which was the omission of the gods. But the thing is, platny people argue that helen of troy (the mini series thing that always showing) is the best version of Illiad. Helen o troy was not real retarded? allyuh don't find they reach real close with Troy?

they should have another odyseus in the same style, no?

actually the biggest flaw in Troy was not the omission of the GODS but rather the sense of time that the war took, based on the movie it looked as if the war over in about 2 weeks

Conan The Barabarian owns all base as far as Myths go, mainly because it's one of the few franchises that limited the amount of movies to be released. let's face it you thinking conan movies there aren't many to compare it to, unlike the over used Greek and Roman mythologies.
Very true..Troy was aiight...but Conan had a more mythical feel to it and so did Gladiator.
Another cool and accurate greek film was.....

Disney's Hurcules!! ^_^ ^_^

no movie has been good when it comes to myths imo.....except maybe the ramayan and mahabharat series.

troy - no gods, where is ajax, hercules bow, continuity as mentioned before is wrong, achilles died prior to the troy being breached, etc etc
excalibur - decent but corny, excalibur wasnt the sword in the stone, etc

i saw a fairly decent flick about the odyssey on sci fi some time ago starring armand assante. For a old lady vanessa williams looked real good as calypso ( and i do mean real good)

Gladiator was awesome.

another exceptional bit of television based on those times is ROME.

13 Episodes of retro goodness. Chronicles of two soldiers in the army of Julius Caesar.

I loved the Conan movies myself but they got worse in later iterations. The wiki agrees. They changed the flavour from the dark mythic to a more light hearted comical one. Poor form.

I think the best is yet to come though...have you seen the trailer for 300?? OMFG the trailer alone is worth the price of admission.

Hmm, first people to ever give conan a good say. Something about Conan just wasn't serious, probably the name. That Oddesey with Assante was more accurate than Troy, but Assante just didn't pull off the whole Oddeseus image. He was too serious.

Up to now i ain get a chance to see Rome yet, but it looks good. But gladiator, allyuh? The first time I saw Gladiator it remind me of wrestling - and not serious wrestling but Raw and Smackdown. remember the good old days with Rock and Smackdown? Well anyhow, it take me about ten times before i could say that the picture is good. But it have the whole tragedy angle covered so say what?

what allyuh find about Jason and the arganauts? the old version i find was better. NBC just screw it up, no?

Well, hopefully we will get a decent Greek myth movie in the near future. David Jaffe got a deal with Universal to make a movie based on God of War.

I think that qualifies as myth.

It surely could not be historically accurate.

a huge exageration at the very least.

Normally they do, I agree. I will give this one a chance though. Uwe Boll does not seem to be anywhere near it and David Jaffe is crazy enough to get a good bit of his vision on film. Plus, it is Kratos we talkin about. Hmm ... now that I think about it, who would be a good actor for that role? Oh $hit, I got it ... Jason Statham. Perfect.

Personally I thought that Statham would have made a perfect Agent 47 (Hitman) but fate put that role in Vin Diesel's hands.
Heaven help us

Hmm ... Vin actually has the voice for Kratos but Jason has more overall to offer. I agree that Jason would be a good choice for Agent 47 having already played similar roles.

TROY WAS MESS... let me spell it over $ H I T... or here's another spelling C R A P... wait there is 1 more spelling (amazing how you can spell 1 thing 4 ways, isn't it? :)) F ^ C K E R Y!!! there troy was all these things... Now that ranting is out of the way. I think that Gladiator was great... but I guess it doesn't quite fit the description outlined by the topic starter... How come men eh say BRAVEHEART??? I think it fits in this catergory of myth as though based on historical accounts, parts were of course embellished.. ok so maybe thats a stretch... myth... hmm... Athur was decent... ( I think that was the name) and it fits this topic perfectly. The retelling of a mythical story of king athur and the round table with the spin of being actually based on a roman warrior.... plus Kyra was in it XD. What else.... myth... myth.... how about Ben Hur? 10 Commandments? and all other such biblical based movies that back in those days had to take on scales of GRANDURE to accomplish what we NOW do with computer generated effects? all of those from a certain perspective could be deemed 'mythical'???

Troy had some excellent cinematography, supurb sound effects and some dynamic film editing....but the story was a bit melodramatic and was loaded with enough plot holes similar to swiss cheese.
It wasn't that bad though...

I would say that myth is basically mythology-based and usually that involves ancient Greek or Roman myths. Mythology kinda implies the involvement and appearance of the gods and mythical creatures (cyclops, medusa, etc.). With that kind of a limitation, I can't think of anything other than the old Harryhausen movies unless you count the Odyssey TV mini-series.

True ... Greeks and Romans are just the first that come to my mind in terms of film. You can probably also count stuff like The Mummy with Egyptian mythology.
