Open Sauce Java to get a GPL licenceIt’s a GNU, how do you do?By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 08 November 2006, 09:51RUMINATIONS from Sun have indicated that it will release its Open Source Java code under the GNU GPL licence.According to CRN, Sun is close to announcing that it will put the mobile and standard editions of the Java platform under a GPL licence. It will shift its Java Enterprise Edition and GlassFish reference implementation, which are open sourced under the more restrictive Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL) later. OpenSolaris will be flogged under CDDL.Using the GPL is a bit strange as it requires Sun to require those making changes to the core Java platform to freely release their code. If it does go ahead, then it will be welcomed by Open Saucers and give Sun a lot of cudos and cuddles. Most Open Saucers hate the licensing complexity of the CDDL. µ
