CPU by GPU and OS

There are 2 articles that I would normally have put separately but since they're along the same lines i'll just lob them together here:

First we have Nvidia's take

Nvidia at work on combined CPU with graphic

On 65nm in 2008

By Fuad Abazovic: Thursday 19 October 2006, 13:22

WE MANAGED to confirm that Nvidia has started to develop a CPU.
Charlie wrote about the interesting implications of Nvidia's good fortune in acquiring some folk from Stexar, a company that was known for its X86 marchitectural expertise.

And now we hear that development is underway at Nvidia's just-announced Portland, Oregon, Design Center, where chip folk are beaving away on 45 nanometre designs.

The project should bear fruit sometime in 2008, as Nvidia prepares plans to compete with Intel and AMD on the blended graphic and CPU concept.

This is what OEMs want in 2008. Sixty-five or 45 nanometre processes make this possible and AMD and Intel are going to do it, so Nvidia doesn’t have much choice.

It seems Nvidia might remain a feisty player in the years to come, unless someone fanatically swallows it.

Things are certainly heating up. µ

And now Microsofts????

Microsoft starts CPU architecture team

Come on Intel!

By INQUIRER staff: Thursday 19 October 2006, 13:51

WE'VE LONG said that Intel should take Microsoft head on and design an operating system that is optimised, fast and robust.
According to the NY Times today, Microsoft will start a Computer Architecture Group, headed up by a man who runs the Silicon Valley campus.

So perhaps it's time for Intel and AMD to take up the challenge of the OS. For Intel, it wouldn't be too hard - it contributed extensively to the design of Windows 98. Last week it announced a partnership with Glide which will give access to applications from within a browser.

Everytime we've asked Intel about designing an OS it's executives have refused to be drawn on the subject. The man in charge of the group, Charles Thacker, has worked on Xbox designs, spent some time at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, and also worked at DEC.

Nvidia Stexar move turns gun turrets on AMD, Intel

The firm Intel, AMD let slip

By Charlie Demerjian: Monday 23 October 2006, 13:42

ONE HAS TO WONDER if the dealings with Stexar will be seen as one of the most damaging missteps of modern semiconductor design or the greatest victory. No, not referring to AMD, Intel or Nvidia but AMD, Intel and Nvidia all could be mortally wounded by the actions they took around the company.
A little history for you, a bunch of really bright Intel folk decided that the house of silicon was no longer strong enough for them, the big bad wolf could come and blow it down. So, they left and built their own house, and from what we hear, it was a very nice house filled with amazingly smart and talented people. There was probably a Starbucks nearby, mainly because they are everywhere.

The projects they were working on were closely tied to AMD, specifically Fred Weber at AMD. They were working on a set to box type chip with multimedia/vectorish instructions, basically an x86 DSP, or at least that is what the rumors were.

They also did a bunch of engineering work for AMD, and all reports said that they did some really inventive and creative things. They also were in line for a lot of money. When the AMD politics went all soap opera like around several people, Weber being one of them, Stexar may have lost its champion.

The possible mistake was not simply buying Stexar then and there. AMD had good reason to do this, including incorporating Stexar New Instructions into the core K8 CPUs. In any case, it didn't happen, and to make a long story short, AMD bought ATI and had little need for Stexar. Stexar the company didn't last very long from there.

If that was AMD's mistake, what was Intel's, other than letting the engineers go in the first place? Well it is rumored that some people tried to go back to Intel , and were made some promises by high level Intel execs. This could have resulted in some very interesting things coming out of Intel in a few years.

Sadly, we are told internal politics got in the way, and at least one person had his legs kicked out from under him, and the promises turned out not to be, or at least were rescinded. The Stexar folk (Stexites? Stexy ones?) went off to greener pastures from there, and slipped through Intel's fingers.

Where does a team of engineers of this calibre go when they are not really welcome at AMD or Intel? Easy, greener pastures was not a euphemism, they went to Nvidia. What are they doing at Nvidia? Well duh, they are making a CPU.

The ATI buy put Nvidia is a really tough spot, it either has to make a CPU, change its entire product line, or wither and die. Given the egos involved, the first one is the only real option, not that they haven't threatened it in the past. I even think they have a better than average change of success in their venture, and it may be a very interesting product when it rolls out.

Why is this a problem for Nvidia, it sounds like a CPU could be a very good thing? The problem is that it is now in direct competition with the two firms which make the things its products plug into, AMD and Intel. You can almost hear the gun turrets swivelling toward Santa Clara.

This could be a fatal mistake for Nvidia, or it could be its greatest triumph. In any event, there are some non-trivial hurdles to clear before they can make a CPU, but that is a story for tomorrow. µ

This is part one of two. Part two will be published tomorrow.

is going in in silicon valley

you know, all this action and counter action could be veryyyyyy bad for us all!
in the end, they could all fail and we could be left with out intel amd ati and nvidia!

wtf would we do then?? buy macs?
