Yuh sure I couldn't persuade you to buy an Opteron Mr. Core 2?
« on: October 16, 2006, 02:58:58 PM »
Basically they cutting price on Opterons. Yuh getting 175 dual core Opties for <300USD. We all know those might as well be labelled like gainward GOES LIKE HELL models... but anyways. So before yuh think about antying up for Mr. Core 2 Duo, yuh may wanna check out Mr. Opty.

AMD unannounced price cuts revealed

Get 'em while they are hot

By Charlie Demerjian: Monday 16 October 2006, 18:13

AMD ANNOUNCED a surprise round of price cuts today, and they are good through the end of the year. They are only on S939 Opterons, AKA 1xx series, but are good on PIB and Tray parts.
This tells me that OEMs shifted to Socket AM2 a lot quicker than AMD had hoped, and there is a pile of parts sitting in a warehouse waiting for a loving owner.

Upgraders, Christmas arrived early, those tray 170s and 175s look pretty good.µ

Prices are: ($US)

Optys are nice, if they drop the prices of the AM2 line to, it could actually halt the core migration. BTW for the reocord, I'm no fan boy, I just go with what ever is the fastest at the moment. If AMD were selling FX-62's for $350 that could OC to 3.4g I'd have that!

O.o i suspect this is for noob amd users who already have a 939 board

they cant possibly be expecting people to buy new 939 boards and these stupid things can they?

in the case of current amd owners who want to stay on 939
well, you suck anyway so what you do doesnt mattter

STEUUPPSSSS!!!!!    Totally arrogant fanboyism.

SOME of us not exactly rolling in money to run out and buy the fastest thing out there.

Socket 939 owners would do well to hold on until the next migration in CPU architecture, and
concentrate on getting the best CPU that they can afford (939) and/or upgrading their video cards.
The video card upgrade is by far the most powerful jump in performance you will get ANYWAY (if you talking GAMING of course).

I am sure a couple hundred USD would make someone think twice.

THats not true arc

Look at prowls machine, Same video card as alot of other machines and MUCHH greater performance and benchies thanks to his core 2 duo. Jedi is soon to get an even better card than prowl soon, which is probably going to cost upwards of 350 usd, but still wont take the crown from prowl thanks to his core 2 duo, sub 350 usd.

Its not fanboyism. the core 2 duo pound for pound out matches its amd counterparts in price an performance.
If your buying a new machine, your not going to buy a fx62 for what 600+ dollars? that gets pounded into the dust by an e6600 for sub 350 usd Plus the overclocking potential of said chip way surpases the potential of a fx62.

If your an old 939 owner and wanna continue to waste your money on amd then go ahead, thats yur choice. Which is precisely way i said too. But if your investing in NEW hardware(which is what i said also) then you wouldnt be purchasing a 939 board and weak amd processor in the light of the numerous advantages of core 2.

Now whos the fan boy blindly following inferior tech from an inferior company

<=======Watch my face.....

Crixx you are missing my point.

Notice I said 'the best CPU they can AFFORD'!!!
If a 939 user can now afford Core2 hardware, and wants to purchase 'em, then by all means go through hard, but not ALL users can afford to do so.  Its as simple as that.  Irregardless of the 'numerous advantages of Core 2'.

I'm not blindly following anything.  I would like to have a Core2Duo setup eventually, but the price of that upgrade is somewhat prohibitive.
The emphasis of my argument is on TOTAL PRICE OF UPGRADE (motherboard, CPU, RAM). I agree, if building a new machine it IS better to use the faster hardware, but when you have cheaper hardware that works really well, its a no-brainer that some buyers will gravitate towards that as well.  I still intend to do a final CPU (X2 4400 or 4800) and VGA (7900GS) upgrade on my current platform, and I know that there will be a significant performance jump in gaming power.

Even when I decide to upgrade from my current 939 setup, the cost of all new components will naturally drive me towards AM2.  Not because of fanboyism, but because of the total cost of upgrading.

I just cannot afford Core2 hardware at this point, and I'm quite sure my AM2 setup will play all the latest games VERY well, once I invest in a 'bess' video-card.

I only do serious gaming on weekends anyway, so it makes no sense economically (to me) to spend all that money on Core2 hardware at this point.  That may change at some point in the future.

I have to agree with Arc here. I own a 939 rig and I upgraded to an X2 4400+. Now I am faced with a situation where I want to up meh mobo and video. However I don't have the dinero to go for new mobo, video, cpu, ram, psu, case, etc.  I mention more or less ALL of the rig becuase I would want to improve cooling etc. Plus I will need DDR2 and to run the new card I need a better PSU (at least I look at the PSU as being critical so I prefer better than present). So in my situation even though I need to aquire a new mobo in the least, it's still cheaper for me to get teh new mobo, video card and PSU than to go Core 2. Don't get me wrong, had I the money, sure Core 2 it would be. However econimically speaking, its alot cheaper to keep my somewhat recently aquired X2 and just get PCIe video. I will see a drastic increase in performance and there won't be any games present of even in the near future that I will have problems playing. Even if I were completely changing the rig (i.e. new ram, new case, etc) I would consider AM2 on price, or if I were building a media server, i'd consider an Opteron and some other VERY affordable parts to slap together a good performance, low cost system. What is the current intel alternative? PrescHOTT? those will be dead soon, perhaps Celeron based on core??? PLEASE, Celery is for eating not computing. As it stands, AMD is NOT the performance king (at least on the 1-2U front) however they have simply moved back to their previous spot AKA budget systems. We really will have to wait to see the performance comparison of K8L to Core 2. The way I see it, if K8L is as good as Core 2, that would mean AMD caught up in the performance dept in less than 1 year, which is NOT something Intel can boast in the PrescHOTT vs. Hammer.

K8l will be a boost to AMD but beating core, doubtful, matching it, most likely but Intel did get the jump and if they're smart keep the lead. As far as cost of upgrading goes, if your going to be upgrading a new mobo and cpu, it's worth it to go core, if just a simple cpu or just new mobo, then it's best to stick with what you have. If your building a new system core is so worth it! even with k8l comming core is a wise investment ( as was northwood when it was new, or 64 x2 ).  it will be some time ( 2-3 yrs ) before a core2 gets to the point presshot or non x2 amds are now. Basically though, if your going to upgrade, get am2 or core ready 775 boards so your future ready.

I wouldn't quite put it as future ready there prowl. In intel land yuh gotta be very careful which chipset you buy if yuh hoping to go Quad core. I think AMD still has a better stab at upgrading the core # on the same platform. That aside I just read that QC AMD parts are not due out until Q2-Q3 2007 so AMD go REAL salt ftw. They are bringing out their 4x4 platform, but being honest here, I find that just not worth it without QC parts. At least then yuh could run 4 cores + a co-processor (read GPU). The whole 2xAM2 X2s just not cutting it imho. Granted AMD doesn't do what intel does to up cores which is slap 2 identical dies on 1 piece of silicon so in that respect I give some props to AMD, however I think it would be wiser to opt for that route in the interim. Cause quite frankly until K8L and QC parts from AMD I can't see them being anywhere in the running to match Intels performance sad to say.

I also read that QC parts and AM2+ and AM3 due out far from now will be backwards compatible platform wise, but obviously will run a bit slower as AM2+ and AM3 will use HT3 vs HT2 on present AM2 platforms. I also agree that K8L will prolly match but not BEAT Core 2. AMD is just gonna be the budget CPU ftw. We'll see how thing pan out.
