Well sometimes it can be a bit more complicated when the developer is using middleware for development that isn't ported to Linux or has strange licensing issues and such

ok update
my first post from within damn small linux.
downloaded it, saved it to memory stick, running it now
connected to dsl flawlessly
although i was using vmware player and using the browser app but couldnt get it to work from behind the firewall and proxy @ work, so bummer there.
i have some issues.
when dsl was loading, i saw it register my cpu as a p2 @ 625 mhz and i have a total of like 224 megs of ram
needless to say, taht is super duper sucky.
is this common or is this an issue.
oh and iam runnin the embedded dsl from within windows on my usb stick on my laptop.l
ummm... yeah, when i get home ill try some more things.
gotta head to class now

Maybe the "virtual pc" from which is is run is set to only consume that amount of resources?

Just wait untill 8th dec, Suse 10.2 with live dvd.
I'm testing RC1 and so far with the ati drivers sucking so bad ( amd's fault not supporting xorg 7.2 ) it rocks. Easy to install and dual boot with windows machines to ( just make it a new partition ). do try the live dvd first tho.

Ok, so I downloaded Suse Live 10.1 DVD, a ~ 1.6gb download. Stick it in the lappy. After I select to boot KDE ver 5, it just goes to a blue screen that says "N Suse Linux 10.1" and just remains there. This does not happen with the desktop. Is this thing incompatible with lappys?
Edit: I set it to VESA mode and it halts with a message saying "ide:failed opcode was : unknown"

Compaq Presario V5000, 1.8gig Turion, 1gig ram, etc etc. I'll do the checksum to see what going on. I changed nothing from default. BTW, you said you installed 10.1, but i'm using the Live DVD which requires no installation so I guess u had a different version or something. Yeah KDE 3.5 or whatever, not too sure of the version. Works perfectly on the desktop BTW.

i'll check on some forums, and get back to you..
is there an option to disable ACPI? if so, try that

figured as much. lol
i still think is ACPI givin trouble, but how to pass the 'no apci' option in a livecd, i have't the foggiest
(and i give away muh 10.1 dvd, so i cah even check it out myself lol)
you said you were able to change to set it to vesa mode..
was this from the bios, or an option when suse was booting.. what other options are available when suse booting?

Vesa mode was an option on the dvd itself. Maybe i can try looking for thie ACPI thing. Short of that, ill try another distro, or wait until 10.2 comes out to see if the problem is resolved.

10.2 is out today! and vesa should work with most any xga vid card, it's the default video driver and works with just about anything.
I am wondering if the live dvd is conflicting with something else on the laptop since suse is one of the more laptop friendly linuxes out there.
give me the full specs and the error mesages so I can hunt down what might be wrong.

BWTMC @ 10.2 coming out today and 10.1 now finish this morning. I don't think its a videodisplay issue since the boot screen showed up fine. It jst hung right there. I'll grab the 10.2 and see if that works. If not, any other nice "live" distros can yall suggest. I'll probably look into dual booting.
Edit: Wow @ 4gb. I wonder if it can be used as the live dvd or if it is install only.

I would recommend you try Kubuntu or Mandriva One as a first Linux distro. They are both one CD downloads and have all the software you would need. Mandriva One also has the nice 3D effects set up already which is a plus.
