Trust me...GOW3 and uncharted are more than enough to keep u occupied, the single player experience in those games are among the best. And shit does happen... bad shit too. I'm not in the IT field but and i'm not the most tech savvy person but I would like to think it is very very difficult maybe impossible to make any system totally hacker proof. I am sure that thousands of hackers work really hard every day to infiltrate the playstation network to get free games, extra wallet money etc.... and well it just so happens that a group of ppl happened to get through and frig it up for all of us. Lets remember that even bigger entities have been hacked in the past by persistent hackers including the PENTAGON (a name synonymous with security) which has been hacked multiple times in the past. I'm not saying ppl shouldn't be angry... cuz i damn angry, I wanna play zombies on black ops...but i just think we should be a lil patient while sony fixes this mess and keep our fingers crossed and hope we get a lil free downloadable game in the end, lol. I dunno... maybe my view on this thing is too simplistic (shrugs shoulder)

I totaly understand getting hacked, but 1 i not convinced is that cuase d outage.
2, If sony was doing their job, and dey get hack, man should be back up and runing in not too long a downtime. u mean to say u had to totaly scrap psn? somebody  / bodies need to get fired. How bad u really have to get hack to have to scrap yuh entire system? It unthinkable. Your entire network, not jus US, or Japan, u mean ALL U DAM SERVERS have to scrap, d entire service? no, sorry, i not accepting that, it is too retarded, Somebody / Bodies negligent , dat eh "juss happen".

Also, i played gow1 and 2, so i know d game epic. And i hear uncharted 2 is d best game on ps3 right now. So we go see how it goes.

Update on PlayStation Network
« Reply #3089 on: April 26, 2011, 04:11:25 PM »
Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
 We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

    1 Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

    2 Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

    3 Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.[/li]

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

 TransUnion: 800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division, P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. For Maryland residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202; telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
 Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment

Aye people. XBOX LIVE people as well.

Those of you with multiple consoles and use the SAME EMAIL ADDRESS AND PASSWORD AS YOUR PSN ACCOUNT. This applies for Facebook, email address passwords, MSN, forums etc.
Go change your passwords NOW.

just remember all of this is just speculation eh....

this not a confirmed email... so dont think end of the world scenario immediately lol.

rem they could hack into a system and gain access to all not encrypted stuff... such as email addresses etc... but passwords are usually heavily encrypted (unless sony uses the same key to encrypt everything, which is the key that was used to sign playstation games).

and even the speculated email said they are not sure but would advise users just to be safe @ this point... it may turn out that none of that had been affected.

Speculate no more....

Quote
Sony admits utter PSN failure: your personal data has been stolen
By Ben Kuchera | Last updated about an hour ago

Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get. The hackers have all your personal information, although Sony is still unsure about whether your credit card data is safe. Everything else on file when it comes to your account is in the hands of the hackers.

In other words, Sony's security has failed in a spectacular fashion, and we're just now finding out about it. In both practical and PR terms, this is a worst-case scenario.
What did they get?

Here is the data that Sony is sure has been compromised if you have a PlayStation Network Account:

    * Your name
    * Your address (city, state, and zip)
    * Country
    * E-mail address
    * Birthday
    * PSN password and login name

"It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained," Sony announced. While the company claims that there is "no evidence" that credit card information has been compromised, it won't rule out the possibility.

Their advice is to be safe, rather than sorry. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
What can you do?

You are warned to keep watch over your accounts, and to be aware of your heightened risk of fraud due to the security breach. "For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of e-mail, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information," the company said. "Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information."

Sony has also provided a wealth of sources for data and protection against identity theft.

To be fair, Sony does apologize for the inconvenience. There is still no update on when service will be restored, but that is the least of your concerns if you have a PlayStation Network account. It's time to change your passwords, at the very least, and if you're like to be completely safe it's not a bad idea to cancel your credit or debit cards and request replacements.

We'll continue to follow this story as it develops.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/sony-admits-utter-psn-failure-your-personal-data-has-been-stolen.ars

Now I know the PS3 fanboys prolly half expecting the XBL ppl to point and laugh, but honestly that'd be too easy. Let's just highlight a few important points that apply to all things personal information related:
1. DO NOT USE DICTIONARY works for your PASSWORDS
2. USE STRONG passwords that are at least 8 chars long and that use NON-ALPHANUMERIC chars e.g. #$%^&*() (Where possible)
3. DO NO use the SAME PASSWORD for ALL YOUR various logins. DEFINITELY DO NOT USE the same passwords for your BANKING and EMAIL (that SHOULD BE a no brainer).
4. DO NOT store these passwords on your COMPUTER in a notepad file (in the least least NOT without ENCRYPTING the FILE) see Truecrypt
5. DO NOT give out your passwords to other users (even if they are trusted, their PRACTICES may not be)
6. Seeing as PS3 uses Nvidia remember PS3 TWIMTBP - SINGLE PLAYER (cause you pay for what you get) - sorry you KNOW i had to XD
