i believe its a toned DOWN CPU. Remember SONY doesnt own the chip company anymore. And the PS3 is still costing a loss to make even after tech advancement.
not toned down as in processing power right?

They're just manufacturing the cell using a different process...to cut costs...
the 65nm thing...

With Blu-ray destroying the competition, the availability of cheaper units is going to be a big part in the future success of the format. That is why Sony's recent success in shrinking the basic Blu-ray reader/writer module is a turn for the better. The new modules will pave the way for thinner drive bays and cheaper players.

The units are only 3mm thick, and Sony is confident that the smaller size will allow Blu-ray functionality to become mainstream in standard 9.5mm laptop drives. Sony are further hoping that this move towards greater ubiquity is secured by the end of this year.

The cost effectiveness will be due to a simpler manufacturing process, and the 3mm modules will also be able to read dual layered BDs with organic dye in the recording layers. Such discs can be produced from traditional DVD production lines, again driving down the costs. Sure, this may all sound like great news, but do you not recall the movies, people? The hardships that were faced by a tiny Thomas Brown still bring a tear to my eye.

yup shivadee...Sony is definitely launching a new model...
A higher end one, costing them less therefore possibly surpassing the losses on a unit sold to profits...

Good news for the PS3 camp

Quote
PS3/PSP
At this weeks ISSCC, IBM announced that the Cell CPU used in the PlayStation 3 will soon make the transition to IBM's next-gen 45nm high-k process.

It's expected that the 45nm Cell will use about 40 per cent less power than its 65nm predecessor, and its die area will be reduced by 34 percent.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has unveiled a new Satin Silver Playstation 3, to go on sale in the region on March 6.

The company also announced the availability of a new budget range for the PS3, similar to what has come before on the PS1 and PS2. It's likely we'll see similar announcements in the near future.

For those of us who have spent some quality time with Factor 5's dragon flight simulator for the PlayStation 3, Lair, here's some very good news: the highly-rumored upcoming patch that would give players the option to choose analog controls is now confirmed, and has an ETA of this year's first quarter. Yes!

This news comes direct from this year's Games Developer Conference, where Factor 5 seems to have held a demo of the game with the patch installed. An attendee from IGN's own words can only describe our own elation:

Quote
I played it and Holy shit; Greg needs to give them a new score. It was kind of clear that Factor 5 put in the extra effort a little begrudgingly, but the results were amazing. This might push me over the edge into the “must buy PS3” territory.

Hopefully, they also fixed all the other issues plaguing the game. If they have, then Lair is going to be a very, very fine game indeed, one that deserves a re-playthrough. Updates as we get them!

http://ps3.qj.net/GDC-08-Lair-analog-patch-confirmed/pg/49/aid/114261

You know I always was interested in LAIR...
Had some hyped posts earlier in this thread...
If the patch does come...I won't mind buying LAIR (once I get a nice cheap price)

Hmm ... I will have to keep an eye out for this patch for Lair. If the game is actually playable, it may be worth getting (as one of the PS3 exclusive titles). This IS Factor 5 we're talking about, so analog controls like in their previous outings would kick serious @$$.

take ALLLLLLLL that talk bout Factor 5 and their previous Star Wars RS games and throw it out the window. The analog controls will make the game easier, but it will not make the game better.
This title has some of the worst lighting in a supposed AAA title. The actual controls for the dragon are just terrible. You can shoot fire, land and swipe...and thats it.  Ill be renting it again when the patch is out. Its a shame that there is no depth to this game, it feels like a "game from a movie"

"kill all the enemies before the time runs out"
"stop the troops from reaching the castle gates"
"kill all dragons in the air"
..... :P

U could believe Factor 5 get VEX with reviewers? They say they "didnt play the game right"

hol on there padna.....game design 101. YOU dont tell US how to play a mc game. The GAME is supposed to SHOW us how to play it and THEN we design our OWN style of playing. This is what makes a good game.

When you see these people have to send out a separate manual to reviewers telling them "no this is how you supposed to control the dragon" the interface and controls fail already. Man Wii games didnt have to do that, even for their release titles.

I was talking to someone last week about this. His arguement was he had no problem with the controls....he started to simulate the movements....if u see this fella. slllllloooowwwww to the left and right.
mkay...when im playing a game with dragons that breathe fire and have to fight in the air.....i dont plan on moving slow like that.

Now after flaming this game im not saying Factor 5 sucks, hardly. Their launch title is no indication of their capabilities, the PS3 is not an easy platform to develop exclusives for, not unless u have the right financial backing.

Have a subscription to Game Developer with this months issue being a post mortem on Ratchet and Clank for PS3.
Its amazing how Insomniac does this. Really. Some of the team from RCF were fresh off Resistance...thrown RIGHT into this fray and set on crazy hours and deadlines to finish this title.
In the end RCF was not what Insomniac wanted. They got a title out on time, they got soemthing that looks nice and plays smoothly but they really.....REALLY had to cut stuff out simply because it was the first title on the next gen system and things too allot longer than expected.

Just like Factor 5, by no means is a launch title a representation of a companies capability. I mean is Factor 5 we talking bout here.....not....Koei with Dynasty Warriors zomgovertenthousand or so. Good lord man Koei, give DW a rest, i had enough of Cao Pi (yea g4 watchers who remember that)

MGS4 -
Word from Destination PlayStation, a retailers-only conference for all things PlayStation related, is that Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming to the PlayStation 3 on June 12, 2008. According to sources there now, the release of Kojima Productions action-stealth game will arrive on a Thursday, oddly enough. Even more interesting is that we're hearing word that Sony will be offering a hardware bundle that features MGS4, an 80GB PlayStation 3 and a DualShock 3 packed-in.

DS3-
We have more word from retailer conference Destination PlayStation: the DualShock 3—you know, that DualShock we've been waiting for since the PS3's launch—has gotten a US release date.

Set to launch April 15th for $54.99, it's slated to coincide with the release of GT5 Prologue. Oh yes, feel those engines roar through your controller and make your SIXAXIS-wielding friends envious...like they're just playing a video game or something.

RED PSP -
In addition to Metal Gear Solid 4, Sony will bundle another hit with one of its platforms, offering a special red God of War themed PlayStation Portable package in June. The special edition edition PSP will follow in the tradition of last year's Star Wars Battlefront bundle and feature a rendering of Kratos emblazoned on the back side of the device
