Fellow GATTers, I am sharing an update on the loss, more importantly the EPIC FAIL the the administration at the school where I work is.

I share my office with an IT Teacher. In the Form 6 Lab resides a 2nd IT teacher. All three of us have keys to access the server room, the labs and all contents therein. the Head of Maths does not have keys.
For almost the entire time I have been at [school], I keep my personal laptop on my desk. All documents relating to school business are prepared and saved

I had a meeting with the Principal, the Head of Maths, and the IT Teacher.

The outcome?

• The Principal stated I should have told him I was bringing police to the school; he would have had them enter via an alternate entrance instead of in a marked vehicle through the front gate as schoolchildren and parents were outside: school had already ended.
• HoD and the IT Teacher both acknowledged that I did leave them in the room the last time I saw my laptop.
• The HoD stated that I should have returned to the server room as soon as the power went to ensure that the room was locked and check the equipment. This implies that I am solely liable.
• Principal stated that there should be more security
• They all rejected my suggestion on a IT lab and security policy: they don't like reading documents, especially the principal.

Please note there there was no 'lock down'  and there was no search of the school nor students for the laptop.


Fellow GATTers, I am going to ask you a few simple questions for your own leisure:

1. If the door to the server room is unlocked and there are at least two authorized personnel in the room, is the room secure?

2. If one the two authorized personnel leave the room ad the other remain in the room and the door is still unlocked, is the room secure?

3. If the other or all remaining authorized personnel leave the room and immediately engages the lock to the room upon departure, is the room secure?

4. If there is a power outage during the above describes scenarios, is the room still secure?

5. How does the ICT Tech not returning to the server room in the event  of a power outage that was supposed to be secured by authorized personnel in the ICT Tech's absence - who were present in the room when the Tech left the room under their orders- translate to a breach of security by the ICT Tech?

6. How can the ICT Tech be the only person liable for any loss of equipment when he/she shares the room with other personnel who have full access?

I still assessing my options with regards to a transfer(with haste if i want to block another tech from going to the school I want to go to), but It is possible that my school can actually deny such..

I should have made a separate thread about working at this school when I had just started working there... sigh

Yes, assuming this official is competent.

If room is locked for sure, yes in theory it is secure.

If everyone followed common sense protocol, left the room and locked it shut and power went.

That's a long sentence/question.
Though in the chain of command, you are responsible for the server room... based on all the above and logically concluded, you shouldn't be responsible.

6. How can the ICT Tech be the only person liable for any loss of equipment when he/she shares the room with other personnel who have full access?

This is an example of people following the hierarchy of command system. The Tech guy is responsible for the Tech room. They didn't factor in earlier that other people accessing the room and should be responsible. Its the Tech guy's room, its his fault. Narrow-minded, scapegoat type conclusion, typical Trini way of brushing something aside.

WTMC @ two things
1) My mom works as a bus driver and when she rolled off (thankfully with no passengers) the fire extinguisher fell and the contents flew in her face and eyes. She inhaled alot of vapor and she was almost blinded. Thankfully she's doing better. But detoxing sucks it has frigged up side effects

and 2) November 9th ain't reach yet
