2 shot in military mix-upPartygoers take wrong turn through army main gateTuesday, November 4th 2008A WRONG turn almost caused a carful of young men to lose their lives on Sunday night, when they unknowingly drove onto the Chaguaramas compound of Defence Force. Two of the car's occupants sustained gunshot injuries, during what the Defence Force labelled as "an attempted breach of the military main gate at Teteron Barracks" in a press release yesterday.Aaron Boodoosingh, 28, was shot in the right side of his neck, while Nekoro Belmosa, 27, was shot in the left shoulder during the incident. Both men were struck by the same bullet.Boodoosingh was in the front passenger seat while Belmosa sat in the middle of the back seat. They were listed in a stable condition as the Port of Spain General Hospital last night.Speaking at the hospital yesterday, Boodoosingh's brother, who requested anonymity, recounted the ordeal. He was the driver of the car.Boodoosingh said the group had just returned from a party held "Down the Islands" and were on their way home. But he made a wrong turn to exit the car park used by persons boarding boats to go to the smaller islands. Boodoosingh said he believed he was heading to Carenage. When he reached Teteron, Boodoosingh said he was unable to see exactly where he was going because of the bright lights at the check-point and drove inside.A release from the Defence Force said the sentry fired two warning shots in the air in an effort to stop the car. However, because of the rising crime in the country, Boodoosingh said he believed it was an attempted robbery so he sped off.The sentry then fired a third shot in the direction of the approaching car. This was the bullet that hit the duo.Boodoosingh said at this point his brother and friend complained of being shot and he stopped the car, already some 20 metres into the compound, the Defence Force release said. The group was then approached by Defence Force officers who thought it was an attack. They pulled the men out of the car and accosted the driver, Boodoosingh said.Officers of the Carenage Police Station responded within minutes and calmed the Defence Force officers. The police also searched the car and its occupants but nothing illegal was found.Police investigations have claimed the incident was a mistake made by a group of men, who appeared to be intoxicated.Acting Chief of Defence Staff, Col Roland Maundy, also said yesterday that initial investigations by his men have showed there were no ill intentions by the youth.Yesterday, however, the Boodoosingh family were wondering why the sentry did not shoot at the car's tyres instead.Investigations are continuing.
