I get that too already when I got MY A+ certificate a few years ago... I was luckier because I have a mail 'cylinder', so I was still able to flatten it out .... but I made my displeasure to the post lady known, especially was the DO NOT BEND label was bold on a bright orange background

 - when one of your hard drive goes up in a puff of smoke. Literally. 

What happened? when I applied power to PC, the hard drive began to smoke. The hard drive was a 200GB drive, which contained ALL of my downloads: software, games, game demos, drivers I've collected over the past 5 years, copies of all kinds of various software, ISO files, hard drive images. 100+ GB total.

How? During the installation of the new Thermalright HSF, I had to strip out he entire PC. In the reassembly I made a fatal error:

Now us techies know then when sata drives started to become more common, there were some model drives that had both SATA power and normal IDE power connectors. the 200GB I had was one of those. I made the fatal error of plugging in BOTH at the same time without realizing it.    Oddly enough I was able to boot to windows and it was when I needed to assess the drive I saw it was missing from My computer. On inspection I saw my error. I quickly corrected it. The drive showed up in the BIOS and windows after that... a couple times...

But then at 3am this morning (my body hasn't yet readjusted to not having to go to the airport again), when I was doing data recovery on a customer's drive (that was a success btw) I realized I couldn't get the drive to show up in BIOS..... I had the CPU fan daisy chained into drive, so I though it wasn't receiving any power. Thus I plugged the power cable directly to drive. That is when the smoke started.

Well after quickly puling out the power and pulling out the hard drive cage, my trusty nose detected the 200GB. no other hardware was damaged.

I sat in my couch and sulked a bit.... But wha you go do..... I guess if I had even suspected that my mistake would have demised the drive soon, I'd have transfered all to the 500GB (with 340+ GB still free!)

My only consolation is that all of the software can be re-downloaded, borrowed from friends, copied back from CDs I have lying around. ISO can be re-made, Torrents and other P2P software are still your best friend. It will take quite a bit of time - a few months if I push it - but it will be rebuilt. Better get cracking though!

Later today I shall set out to acquire 2 new hard drives: 300GB and 160GB, both SATA2. At least now I'll have the drive performance I want.

@ Qloxx and Unknown: I concede that much. I guess I now have incentive to go get the 144-DVD holding case in PriceSmart for $84, and replenish my blank DVD supply. Drive live for 1 year, 11 months. I'm actually wondering if to get another 500GB drive now.....hmmm

@ netizen1: the damage to the hard drive was done even before I got up at 3am. it was just a matter of time before the drive it did that in my estimation, because it WAS plugged in properly this time.
