Need for Speed: Carbon is the latest installment in Need for Speed series. It was shown in EA's montage at Sony's Eģ 2006 conference and is the cover story in Game Informer magazine, dated July 2006. It is the first NFS game set to be released for the PlayStation 3 and the Wii. Many of the cars in Need for Speed: Carbon will make a return from Need for Speed: Most Wanted, such as the Porsche Cayman S, the Aston Martin DB9, and the Lamborghini Gallardo. New additions to the car list include the Audi Le Mans Quattro and the new 2008 Dodge Challenger. It is also evident that nighttime racing will make a welcome return to the series as some of the cars appear to have neon lights. This could mean that exotic cars may be featured in tuner races such as drift and may have crazy customization similar to the Need for Speed: Underground series. Carbon will be featuring actress and model Emmanuelle Vaugier as its model. [1]

Game Info
According to Game Informer and Larry LaPierre, Executive Producer of EA Black Box, the game will be taking its ideas from real life racing clubs, giving you the abililty to recruit teammates, which is a first for NFS. From the group of teammates you can pick specific people, like a pathfinder who can help you through the track, a blocker who races beside you in the race and can target cars during the race and knock them off the course, and a drafter who can help you find the slipstream in the race. Also from this team you can assign Fabricators, people who "Trick Out" your ride, Mechanics, and a "fixer", a person behind-the-scenes who can get the "heat" off your back or truckers out of your way. Also new to the NFS franchise is the ability to win territories, which has benefits from certain car part stores to important people. The game will also feature a new technologhy AutoSculpt, a tool giving you the ability to customize everything on your ride, down to how you want your rims to twist on the way from the center to the rim. You can also design exactly how your front and rear bumpers look. The game will also feature drift racing, like that in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and canyon racing, a race where you have to follow a racer down a mountain trail and not hit them or fall off the mountain.

Also according to LaPierre, this game is the sequel to Most Wanted and incorporates many features used in Most Wanted.

According to the July 2006 Game Informer issue, Need For Speed: Carbon's city is located on the West Coast of the United States, presumably California, and according to recent photographs there are multiple districts, each one different from the last. Several real-world cities that apparently influenced the designs of this city are San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and Vancouver. A screenshot of a car's license plate has revealed that the name of the city is named Palmont [2]. Within each district there are 5-7 neighborhoods, and one goal in the game is to win as many of these neighborhoods as possible to gain turf and find better shops and teams. Studies on the photographs of the game itself reveal that there are steep and unforgiving canyons, a massive oceanfront harbor, a central business district lined with skyscrapers, palm tree-lined avenues, rolling high-class hills, Spanish missions, an area loaded with casinos and over-the-top resorts, and what appears to be a 'Little Bangkok' (one photo reveals a lantern-strewn avenue lined with Thai neon advertisements).

[edit]
Rumors and speculation
It has been suggested by a member of Electronic Arts official forums [3], that The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) provides additional keys to the setting and storyline of Carbon by revealing at least some of the characters in the upcoming game [4]. The character information was posted to the IMDb website on March 31, 2006, before the Carbon name was presented. There are several rumors about how the police will affect Carbon. The Internet Movie Database reports Dean McKenzie will return to play the part of Cross. It's still unknown whether or not he's still a police officer, although he likely is. There is also the possibility that he left the force and is on a personal vendetta against the hero since Cross was severely humiliated in Most Wanted.

The game's name is based on Carbon Canyon in California, which is a shocker to many NFS fans because this is the first time the game is based on an actual location:

"NFS Carbon - apparently so called due of its relationship with "Carbon Canyon" in California, where racers often meet up to drive around very fast and probably "race for pinks" and the like - is due out on Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance and PSP this winter.
Those of you wondering whether it shares more in common with the ludicrously popular Need For Speed Underground games or the recent Most Wanted digression will probably find elements of both, by the sound of it, with lots of cop chases but also a definite sense of building up a "crew".

This time your gang of racing pals will have unique characteristics in each of their favour. Some will be better at ramming people off the road, others at slipstreaming and so on. Your pals wont be able to help you during the "canyon races" the title hints at, where you have to race after an opponent without getting caught out by the scenery."

Well, the car list looks ok for now. I long for a day when we can get a new NFS with a list like the one in NFS II or Hot Pursuit II: mostly exotics with names like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, Jaguar,  Lotus, McLaren, etc. It used to be when you were driving a Supra or RX-7, that was the low-end. Dey should leave the tuner cars for Midnight Club and Gran Turismo and stick to exotics. It eh have nothing like racing with a F50, and seeing a XJ220, F1 and Lambo in de rearview along with a few Lambo cops in pursuit, IMHO.

hmmmmm.

Django was right....even though I beat the game...I don't feel the zeal to play it as much as I used to.....I mean "Most Wanted" is better...more exciting.....

Carbon's still cool mind you....but I miss Most Wanted

everyone gets tired of eating the same food everyday
Yeah, just ask Hally Berry EX husband... dude there are some foods you'll never get fed up of LMAO. But honestly I loved Black and though its the best i've seen from them, after I beat it, I too put it down and never picked it up again. I may just install it again to admire the graphics... the console and LIVE! have me in the matrix.. I can't get out... GOW!!!!!

Well a friend of mine said as far as PC racing goes, it stepped it up again (from Most wanted). However seeing it on the 360... I was disappointed. The graphics didn't look as 'stellar' as I expected with such a claim to fame... but then i've been playing Gears Of War and Oblivion lately... so in truth and in fact, yuh hadda come REALLLLLLLLLLLLLL good for me to be impressed with graphics these days. I want to see what it looks like on the PC before I pass my final judgement though.
