Fingerprints on the go

Not that we even have a computerized database of criminals far less for society at large, however this is a system if supported by the correct infrustructure and less corruption would work wonders in good ole T&T:

Brit coppers adopt new fingerprint technique

Digits digitalised

By Nigel Hummingbirdfart: Tuesday 05 September 2006, 15:00

UK COPPERS are adopting a new system of taking fingerprints electronically from the scene of a crime.
The method will enable Inspector Knacker of the Yard to get the prints to be analysed by the lab in 30 to 60 seconds, apparently. Boffins at the University of Sheffield developed the system, which will be used by all 43 UK police forces.

Currently Scene of Crime officers visit several crime scenes and wait until the end of the day to send off prints to a bureau. Now they can use a laptop with a wireless card and a small scanner to send them via mobile phone networks.

In some parts of the UK it was taking four days to identify the digits of the regions crims, but using this system it only took two hours.

The current record time for an examiner attending a scene to a suspect's identity being obtained is 20 minutes.

actually, at one point, the company in charge of all Forensics supply within Trinidad was the Van Alston Group.  They sponsored a symposium with the local authorities on the incorporation of fingerprinting technology within their Investigative department.  I was at a meeting with Martin Joseph, Van Alston, and a couple of others.  They are seriously (or were at that time (about a year and half ago)) seriously looking at establishing such a database within Trinidad (starting primarily) with known criminals (presently in jail) and after they are arrested.  I'm not sure what the current status of this is, as that the company (Van Alston) folded and it's CEO is rumored to have skipped the country.....
I'd believe u if you were right.

he sure scammed some good folks with his "gps" creation....but we had working fingerprint and retinal scanners in the office....fujitsu even approached us for doing some type of rfid chips for license plates....I had to write that whole proposal....but like I said...the guy skipped out before any of it came to fruitiion.  As a Technical Analyst with the company, my task was surveying Trinidad's emerging technology sector, and looking for ways where it could be enhanced, and opportunities to make it happen.  It was a cool job.....even if the guy was a crook.
I'd believe u if you were right.
