dvd help!!!
« on: August 09, 2006, 08:01:15 PM »
i recently burned about 30 dvd's.

some work, and some don't , some stick at about 11 minutes, others at138 minutes and others at 158 minutes into the movie.

the files i used were:
converted from avi to vob (dvd format)
mpg to vob
images of original dvd
folders from original dvd
downloaded images
downloaded vob files

now i think that nothing is wrong with the fils cause in each case of the dvd's, some of the images i put on dvd work, others don't and is the same with all the files.

used another burner on a laptop to burn the dvd's and all of them work in 3 different computers but stick in the 1 dvd player i tried.

the files play good in mediaplayer, divx player and xvid player, even the images run well. so the original file is not corrupt. also scanned all the files with adware, spybot, mcafee, zonealarm and norton.. no infections.

the only thing that i and other persons can come up with is that the burner is going bad. it must have a shimmy in it. it is a liteon dvd+rw ,udated the firmware to recognize all dvd formats, dvd-rw/dvd-r etc. it is 2 years old and did an average od 1 cd or dvd burning per day for 2 years, and used it lately to watch movies.

what can be the problem why the dvd's freeze in the home dvd player.(have not tried other players)

More than likely, you're trying to burn your disks at 8x speed or higher. SLow it down to 4x and they will burn perfectly. I had that same problem about a year ago and that was the only solution i could come up with. I even bought a new burner the other day (liteon) and results are not consistent when burning at speeds over 4x. I guess its a flaw in some of the Liteon burners.

Many people dont have dvd players that play xvid files so i also find myself converting a lot of avi's and xvids into vob files.

i burning dvd'd cause my hard drives are filling up with video files and i aint got enough room in my pc to put many drives and i aint want to have a lot of pc's running as file servers. i got 3 pc's. one for audio, video and document use, 1 for going on the net and the other for experimenting with software and hardware.
i aint want to be swapping hardrives all the time when i want to see a movie

i'll try to burn it slower... is a 8x burner, i burnt at 6x and 8x and had the problem at both speeds and 8x seems to take longer to burn than 6x.

Yeah try burning at 4x. Unless something really wrong with the burner, there will be no more sticking.

no

I mean, if you burn it as xvid, you can put 6 movies on one DVD as data and not have to worry about that issue.

Why are you burning in DVD format?

Probable he's not burning them for personal backup purposes, but for someone who only has a dvd player that handles only standard dvd-video disks.

i have a dvd burner and have never once, not ONCE burnt a movie into dvd format

i abhor the idea of wasting all that time just to walk over to the tv and play the stupid movie.

Dvd players that play xvid? thats awesome, do they recognise any other format as well?

Check this one out as an example. It plays DivX/MPEG4/Xvid.

What if you borrow a movie from someone in dvd format. Y'all really gonna go through the time and trouble to encode that into avi/xvid, just to save a couple gigs on a $2 disc?
